About Tether

Tether is the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, operating the USDT token pegged to the US dollar, as well as USDT-related services such as XAUT, a gold-backed token. Its core business is issuing and managing digital dollars, with reserves primarily held in US Treasury bonds, cash, and gold, ensuring 1:1 backing for its tokens. Tether’s competitive edge lies in its deep liquidity, global distribution network, and strong market trust, making USDT the dominant medium for crypto trading, cross-border payments, and value storage in high-inflation economies.

The main pain point Tether addresses is the volatility and inefficiency of traditional banking and crypto markets. It provides a stable, fast, and low-cost digital dollar alternative, enabling users in developing regions—especially Africa and South America—to protect savings from currency devaluation and access dollar-based financial services without a bank account.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), Tether completed its first full audit by KPMG US, covering its 2025 financial statements, with an unqualified opinion confirming reserves exceeded liabilities by $6.814 billion. The audit included physical counting of gold bars in Swiss vaults. However, Tether did not publish the underlying financial statements, relying instead on quarterly attestations. As of June 30, 2026, total assets were $187.7 billion, liabilities $183.6 billion, with USDT in circulation at $184.6 billion. Excess reserves halved from $8.23 billion to $4.11 billion quarter-over-quarter. Additionally, under the US GENIUS Act, Tether may need to restructure about $4.7 billion in non-compliant reserves (including gold, Bitcoin, and corporate loans) to maintain US market access. CEO Paolo Ardoino stated Tether no longer considers itself a crypto company, but a "digital dollar and digital gold company," with over 650 million users globally. The company is expanding into AI services for developing regions and investing in decentralized communications and solar-powered infrastructure.

Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, has reached several milestones with long-term significance. It completed its first-ever full financial audit by KPMG, receiving an unqualified opinion, marking a historic transparency upgrade. Its gold holdings rose to 146 tons, making it the world's largest private gold holder. Q2 2026 results showed net operating profit of $1.5 billion and reserve surplus of $4.11 billion. A proposed merger of three Tether-related companies failed, leading to the departure of Twenty One Capital's former CEO. USDT faces a two-year compliance countdown, with ~25% of reserves potentially not meeting standards. Tether invested $20 million in Argentina's digital bank Ualá, expanding Latin American presence. It also upgraded its Bitcoin mining kit to full end-to-end open source. Additionally, Tether will gradually cease aUSD₮ operations, focusing on core products like XAU₮.

Positive:

KPMG issued an unqualified audit opinion on Tether's 2025 financials, with reserves exceeding liabilities by $6.8 billion. BDO's Q2 attestation showed a reserve buffer of $4.11 billion. Tether holds ~$141 billion in U.S. Treasuries, and its CEO said it would become a top-five buyer. It also launched StableFund, a private credit fund of up to $3 billion, diversifying income sources.

Negative:

Expanding into private credit raises "shadow banking" concerns, with credit default and regulatory risks. A sharp contraction in stablecoin balances could force Treasury sales, impacting short-term funding markets.

Tether recently welcomed a new team member. Federico Tenga joined in August 2026, taking on the role of Institutional Expansion.

Tenga is a seasoned expert in Bitcoin and the RGB protocol, currently leading R&D at Bitfinex and spearheading RGB protocol implementation and Lightning node development. He previously co-founded Chainside, an Italian Bitcoin payment processor, and served as a blockchain advisor to the Italian Ministry of Economic Development. His addition will strengthen Tether's institutional expansion efforts, particularly in Bitcoin-native stablecoin infrastructure.
