About Upbit

Upbit, launched in October 2017 by Dunamu, has grown into South Korea's dominant crypto exchange, holding over 60% of the local market. Its early years focused on building a compliant fiat on-ramp through bank partnerships, establishing a foundation for mass retail adoption.

A pivotal moment came in 2024 when Upbit finally listed USDT/KRW trading pairs, ending years of regulatory ambiguity and opening a major channel for stablecoin liquidity. This move positioned Upbit as a key gateway for cross-border crypto flows.

In 2025, Upbit faced significant regulatory pressure as South Korean authorities initiated sanction procedures against Dunamu, signaling tighter oversight of the industry. Around the same time, Upbit joined the U.S. Chamber of Digital Commerce, marking its first major international institutional engagement.

By mid-2026, Upbit responded to intensifying competition in the stablecoin market with aggressive countermeasures, including temporary zero-fee promotions and rapid listings of new stablecoins like RLUSD. However, its dominant position in the broader market remained challenged by competitors offering permanent fee waivers.

The exchange also accelerated its listing pace, adding dozens of new tokens in 2026, with new listings contributing nearly 28% of total trading volume by August. This strategy, while boosting short-term activity, raised concerns about the dilution of listing scarcity and long-term competitiveness.

Key progress in the past six months: ① Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Card acquired a 4% stake in Dunamu (Upbit operator) for about $408 million, closing on June 19, 2026, to collaborate on tokenized securities, crypto payments, and AI/cloud/security. ② Upbit Data Lab launched South Korea's first US BTC/ETH spot ETF trend service, updating net flows, AUM, and holdings daily, with future expansion to SOL/XRP ETFs. ③ Upbit launched the Ethereum L2 network Giwa testnet, targeting 1-second block times; the GASOK accelerator provides up to $100,000 per selected team, with results announced on August 14 and KBW Demo Day for VC connections. ④ A stablecoin promotion (July 26-Aug 9 fee-free) listed RLUSD, USDG, etc., but momentum faded; by June 2026 Upbit's stablecoin trading share fell to 30.1%, vs Coinone 34.8% and Bithumb 31.1%, while overall trading share remained 60%.

Future focus: Dunamu is moving toward becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Naver Financial, building a payment ecosystem around stablecoins and digital wallets; regulatory constraints may limit affiliate-issued stablecoins, so Upbit positions itself as a USD stablecoin distribution hub in Korea. Samsung partnerships will expand tokenized securities, payments, and AI/blockchain integration. Upbit Data Lab will broaden ETF coverage and add macro-linked indicators.
