Ethereum's journey began with its 2015 mainnet launch, introducing smart contracts. The 2016 DAO hack led to a hard fork, creating Ethereum Classic. The 2022 Merge transitioned from PoW to PoS, cutting energy use by 99.95%. Dencun (2024) introduced proto-danksharding via blobs, reducing L2 costs. Pectra (2025) raised validator limits and enabled EOA smart contract features. Glamsterdam (2026) will bring ePBS and block-level access lists, while Hegotá (2027) plans privacy transactions via FOCIL and native account abstraction. These upgrades solidify Ethereum as a scalable, secure settlement layer.
Ethereum, the first smart-contract blockchain, was founded by Vitalik Buterin in 2013. Co-founders include: Vitalik Buterin — conceived Ethereum, authored the whitepaper, remains active in development. Gavin Wood — developed Solidity, wrote the Yellow Paper. Joseph Lubin — early funder, founded ConsenSys (MetaMask, Infura). Jeffrey Wilcke — created Geth, the original execution client. Mihai Alisie — co-founded Bitcoin Magazine, helped establish the Ethereum Foundation in Switzerland. Anthony Di Iorio — funded and co-founded Ethereum in late 2013, founded Decentral & Jaxx. Amir Chetrit — co-founder. Charles Hoskinson — co-founder, later founded Cardano/IOHK.
Ethereum has no CEO or central authority; it is community-governed. Current key figures: Vitalik Buterin (active in development) and Joseph Lubin (leading ConsenSys).
