About Bybit
Bybit is a global centralized exchange and integrated financial platform known for derivatives, also offering spot, on-chain trading, yield products and tokenized assets. It addresses the split between traditional securities and crypto accounts and the inability to trade outside market hours by mapping physically backed equities onto the Mantle network as on-chain tokens, letting users trade crypto and around-the-clock tokenized stocks in one account. Its core mechanisms include order-book matching and clearing logic, a user protection fund, Merkle-tree proof of reserves, and an architecture that connects tokenized stocks to Mantle DEX liquidity with 1:1 physical-share backing for pricing and redemption.
The trade-off is that tokenized stocks depend on the issuer and custodian's ongoing cooperation, cross-asset settlement adds counterparty and compliance complexity, and centralized custody still carries platform security risk. In October 2026, Bybit partnered with Mantle to launch mStocks, an around-the-clock tokenized-equity product backed 1:1 by physical shares and linked to Mantle DEX liquidity.
In 2018, Ben Zhou founded Bybit, growing quickly through derivatives trading.
In 2022, Bybit moved its headquarters to Dubai, strengthening Middle East compliance.
In October 2024, Bybit settled the FTX bankruptcy claim for $228M, clearing a major legacy legal risk.
On February 21, 2025, North Korea's Lazarus Group stole ~$1.5B from Bybit, the largest crypto theft ever.
In February 2025, Bybit covered client losses from its own reserves within 72 hours, maintaining solvency.
In 2025, Bybit secured UAE VAPO and EU MiCA CASP licenses, shifting toward an integrated financial platform.
On-chain data & burn: Per DefiLlama, Mantle Network TVL fell from a peak of about $685 million in April 2026 to roughly $70.4 million on August 20, a roughly 90% drawdown in four months; MNT has no open-market buyback, protocol fees are retained in network wallets rather than burned, and a community proposal on September 18 for revenue-funded buybacks has not yet gone to a vote.
Products & partnerships: On October 13, 2026, Bybit CEO Ben Zhou announced mStocks, a 24/7 tokenized-equity product built with Mantle, backed 1:1 by real shares and connected to Mantle DEX liquidity; Mantle's tokenized assets reached $476.1 million on September 25, up 110% in 30 days. Its treasury stood at about $2.4 billion on October 12 (about 72% in MNT), while MNT fell about 15% in one week in early October.
On July 9, 2026 Mantle migrated the Super Portal it co-developed with Bybit from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP, hardening cross-chain transfers for more than $2.5 billion of MNT during a July 9–15 window. On July 29 it added Finloop's FUIDL tokenized dollar liquidity product as trading collateral, and on August 4 Bybit Payments GmbH obtained an e-money institution licence from Austria's FMA.
On June 29 Bybit said it would gradually restrict European Economic Area users' access to parts of the global platform. It also blocked a series of fake-deposit attacks that could have cost about $1 billion in DOT. Bybit's future strategy and roadmap: pursue recovery of stolen assets and tighten multisig and third-party wallet dependencies, expand licensed European payments and tokenized collateral, and improve Mantle cross-chain security and institutional offerings.
Future strategy and roadmap: Bybit puts crypto, US equities and tokenized stocks on one margin sheet: more than 1,000 US stocks and ETFs went live on October 12, mStocks with Mantle follows in November as one-to-one backed tokens usable as collateral in the Unified Trading Account and tradable in Mantle AMM pools, and IPO Express reaches primary offerings at the issue price. TradFi perpetuals have traded over $180 billion, setting up a direct contest with Robinhood, Coinbase and Interactive Brokers where cross-asset collateral is the differentiator; five new licences across the EU, Cayman Islands, Indonesia, South Africa and El Salvador map the jurisdictions it can serve. Robinhood is expanding equities in Europe and Coinbase is moving into stocks and derivatives, leaving cross-asset collateral as one of the few real gaps.
Ben Zhou is co-founder and co-CEO of Bybit. He spent his early career in operations and project management across traditional finance and FX brokerage, then founded Bybit with his team in Singapore in 2018, and has long owned external communication and global expansion and is based in Dubai.
Rockman Zhang is CTO, responsible for matching, custody and security engineering and leading in-house matching and real-time risk teams. Robert Macdonald is chief legal and compliance officer, arriving from compliance roles at licensed institutions to handle regulator relationships; Helen Liu, a former co-CEO, left in April 2026, and Ben Zhou took interim oversight of the operations she ran. Engineering, legal and regional operations report to the CTO and the co-CEO.
Bybit has seen notable team changes recently. In terms of hires: Richard Kim joined as Institutional Sales in March 2026; Peter Loo became Chief Legal and Compliance Officer in April 2026; Derek Dai took on the role of Head of Marketing Operations in August 2026; and Sean Ballard was appointed Head of Derivatives and Institutional in September 2026. On the departure side: HR Business Partner Phoebe Peng left in March 2026, and former Chief Legal & Compliance Officer Robert MacDonald departed in April 2026, with Peter Loo succeeding him. These moves signal Bybit's focus on strengthening institutional business, compliance, and marketing operations.
