About WalletConnect
WalletConnect is an open-source protocol that securely connects crypto wallets to decentralized applications (dApps). It acts as a communication bridge, allowing users to interact with dApps on their phones or desktops without exposing private keys. The core value lies in its chain-agnostic design, supporting multiple blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, and Cosmos through a single connection. It solves the pain point of fragmented wallet-dApp interactions and reduces security risks by keeping private keys on the user's device and using end-to-end encryption via decentralized relay nodes. In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), WalletConnect has focused on expanding its network infrastructure with the WCT token, introduced NFC tap-to-pay functionality through WalletConnect Pay, and launched an AI Agent SDK for automated transactions. It also enhanced security with the Verify API to combat phishing. However, the ecosystem has faced challenges, including phishing attacks using cloned dApp frontends and a fake WalletConnect app on Google Play that stole funds in 2024. These issues highlight ongoing risks in user education and verification.
WalletConnect, an open-source wallet connectivity protocol, began as a bridge linking wallets and dApps. Key milestones: 2024 TGE and token allocation; community governance vote approving WCT transferability (March 2025), enabling token liquidity and broader participation; multi-chain exchange integrations (Binance Launchpool, Coinbase roadmap, OKX, MEXC) expanding accessibility; Stacks integration simplifying wallet adaptation; and the shift toward decentralized node operations. These events mark the transition from a utility protocol to a community-governed ecosystem with transferable assets, aligning with long-term decentralization goals.
Positive: H1 2026 network volume reached $207.82B (stablecoins 82.5%), covering 900M users, showing growing adoption; in September, WalletConnect released its first regulatory report as regulation shifts to enforcement, aiding compliance expectations.
Negative: On Aug 15, 12.63M WCT (~1.3% of supply) unlocked, mostly for treasury/team, still creating sell pressure; price is down ~97% from ATH and hit a record low on Aug 14; KuCoin delisted WCT margin trading on June 3; future circulating supply will rise toward the 1B cap, so dilution risk persists.
Pedro Gomes is the founder of WalletConnect, having previously worked on Balance.io and Connext. Jess Houlgrave serves as CEO, with a background in fintech and blockchain strategy. Derek Rein is the CTO, specializing in cryptography and decentralized systems. All three are key figures in the WalletConnect ecosystem.
