About Movement
Movement is a blockchain framework built on the Move programming language, originally designed to bring Move's safety and flexibility to the Ethereum ecosystem. Its core business has shifted from being an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent Layer 1 network, focusing on cross-border payments and stablecoin settlements. The project now targets the $685 billion global remittance market, especially in low- and middle-income countries, by integrating licensed payment channels in the US, Canada, and the EU, with partners including Circle (USDC), KAST, Sorted, and Oro.
Market pain points include high cross-border transfer fees (averaging 6.36%), slow settlement times, and the lack of compliant payment infrastructure in existing public chains. Movement aims to reduce remittance costs to below 1% and achieve sub-500ms settlement, making blockchain payments practical for everyday use.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-31), Movement underwent a major transition. In June 2026, it announced the pivot from Ethereum L2 to a sovereign L1, abandoning the original technical narrative for a payment-focused strategy. However, in July 2026, Movement Labs (the original developer) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware, with assets between $100,000 and $500,000 and liabilities up to $10 million. The bankruptcy stemmed from a market-making agreement that led to a token dump, causing MOVE to lose over 99% of its value from its all-time high. Core development was transferred to a new entity, Move Industries, which continues operations independently. The bankruptcy is a significant negative event, but the network itself remains operational under new management.
Movement, a modular Move-based blockchain framework, evolved from an Ethereum L2 into an independent Layer 1. Key milestones include its 2022 founding, a $38M Series A led by Polychain in 2024, and the MOVE token listing in December 2024. The project faced a major crisis when a market-making agreement funneled 66 million MOVE tokens (5% of supply) to intermediary Rentech, which sold them a day after listing, causing a price crash. The foundation repurchased tokens with recovered funds, launched a third-party review, and severed ties with the market maker. Founder Rushi Manche was dismissed in May 2025, and the company rebranded as Move Industries under new leadership. In 2025, Movement pivoted to a Layer 1 blockchain supporting native staking and Move 2, with TVL surpassing $200 million. The project filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2025, listing assets under $500,000 and liabilities up to $10 million, while Move Industries continued operations independently.
Movement recently added Akeel Qureshi as CMO (July 2026), while Head of Developer Relations Rahat Chowdhury departed in August 2026 after serving since December 2025. These changes reflect a shift in leadership focus, strengthening marketing while transitioning developer relations.
