About MultiversX
MultiversX is a sharded Layer 1 using Secure Proof of Stake and adaptive state sharding, splitting account state and execution across shards that process in parallel while validators are reshuffled each round to reduce collusion. It targets payments, DeFi and consumer applications that need throughput and low fees: the account model natively supports EGLD transfers, staking and token issuance, contracts run on a WASM virtual machine, cross-shard transactions are coordinated through asynchronous messages and the metachain, and finality comes from the consensus round inside each shard.
Core components include xExchange, the MultiversX Wallet and the Herotag on-chain identity, with contracts written in Rust and deployed through mxpy, and fees priced in gas and partly burned. Supernova activated on 10 September 2026 at epoch 2233, cutting block time from 6 seconds to 600 milliseconds, intra-shard finality to under 250 milliseconds and cross-shard settlement from 18 seconds to 2.4 seconds; the network paused for 24 minutes during the upgrade and about 84% of 5,176 nodes completed migration.
MultiversX, formerly Elrond, was founded in 2017 and launched its mainnet in July 2020. It uses adaptive state sharding and Secure Proof of Stake (SPoS), with a community testnet recording 263,000 TPS, laying a foundation for high performance.
In November 2022, it was renamed MultiversX, shifting from a single blockchain to metaverse, AI, and Web3 infrastructure. In 2024, it integrated OpenAI and Stripe protocols to enable AI-driven on-chain transactions, connecting large language models and payment flows to the blockchain.
The MultiversX Foundation launched the annual Growth Games funding program, totaling $1.5 million, focusing on AI-blockchain integration, with staged support for development, acceleration, and launch. Animoca Brands joined as a validator, participating in network consensus and promoting gaming and metaverse applications, enhancing ecosystem diversity.
Mainnet upgrade: Supernova activated on September 10 at epoch 2233, cutting block time from 6 seconds to 600 milliseconds, intra-shard finality below 250 milliseconds and cross-shard settlement from 18 seconds to 2.4 seconds. About 84% of 5,176 nodes migrated first, the chain paused for 24 minutes, and EGLD rose 8.71% to $5.45.
Staking and tokenomics: Staking v5 pays about 9.2% with the 10-day unbonding period unchanged. Supply moved from a fixed cap to roughly 9.47% annual tail inflation plus a 10% fee burn, weakening the scarcity story; a separate proposal discusses decaying inflation.
MultiversX's year turned on the Supernova upgrade and a forced chain halt. A January governance vote passed Supernova with 99.64% support on 32.4% participation; the final mainnet build v2.0.6.0 shipped on 7 September and activated on 10 September at round 32,157,661, decoupling consensus from execution so block intervals fell from six seconds to 600 milliseconds, intra-shard finality dropped below 250 milliseconds and cross-shard settlement compressed from about 18 seconds to 2.4, all without raising validator hardware requirements.
On 19 September the MultiversX network halted deliberately after detecting an attempted exploit of a virtual-machine atomicity flaw, stopping block production for about five days. The team rehearsed on testnet and devnet, shipped a recovery hard fork as v2.1.3.0 and v2.1.5.0, restored blocks on 24 September, reopened the Ethereum bridge and saw exchanges resume deposits and withdrawals in phases from 6 October, after Upbit and Kraken had issued trading cautions.
Post-upgrade, MultiversX's attention goes to applications that need millisecond finality such as high-frequency trading, real-time payments and responsive gaming, with integrators told to wait for notarised execution results rather than block finality, while the finance-computer narrative connects custody, identity and distribution systems.
