About Lido

Lido is a liquid staking protocol on Ethereum. Users deposit ETH and receive stETH, a rebasing token that accrues staking rewards while remaining usable in DeFi. wstETH is a non-rebasing wrapper for integrations that cannot handle rebasing tokens. LDO is the governance token.

Liquid staking solves the liquidity problem of traditional staking: users no longer need to lock 32 ETH and run validator infrastructure, nor do they face long exit queues. Instead, they hold a transferable token that can be traded, used as collateral, or integrated into other protocols.

In the past six months (March–September 2026), Lido has focused on protocol efficiency and institutional adoption. The DAO approved Curated Module v2 in July 2026, migrating over 8 million staked ETH (about $16.5 billion) to Ethereum's post-Pectra 0x02 validator architecture. This consolidation is expected to reduce Ethereum's validator count from roughly 880,000 to 628,000 and cut attestation messages per epoch by about 29%. The upgrade also introduces, for the first time, ETH bond requirements for all 34 curated node operators to cover slashing and operational risks. Community Staking Module v3 was also deployed with Identified DVT clusters. On the institutional front, Anchorage Digital integrated Lido in July 2026, allowing clients to mint/burn wstETH directly within custody.

Negative developments within two years: In May 2025, a hot wallet used for Lido Oracle voting by node operator Chorus One was compromised, resulting in a loss of 1.46 ETH. The incident was contained to a single oracle key and did not affect user funds. Lido has also faced long-standing criticism regarding its concentration as the largest staking entity on Ethereum, holding roughly 90% of the simple liquid staking sector. In April 2026, the KelpDAO stress event caused stETH to trade at a discount of about 59 basis points on Curve, and Lido's EarnETH vault was frozen for 27 days due to exposure not created by Lido itself.

Lido, launched in December 2020, pioneered liquid staking by issuing stETH, a rebasing token representing staked ETH plus rewards. In 2022, it introduced wstETH for DeFi composability, and in 2023, launched the Community Staking Module (CSM) to enable permissionless node operation. A major 2025 upgrade consolidated over 8 million ETH, reducing validator count by one-third and improving efficiency. In 2024, Lido launched EarnETH and EarnUSD vaults for yield strategies, and in 2025, activated the NEST automated buyback mechanism with a $10M annual limit. The protocol also demonstrated resilience during the 2026 Kelp security incident, where core staking assets remained secure, and it proposed a $5.8M stETH bridge to cover affected vaults. Notably, the Ethereum Foundation redeemed 21,271 ETH from Lido in 2025, signaling institutional trust. Lido's dual governance model, introduced in 2025, empowers stETH holders with veto power, marking a long-term shift toward decentralized control.

Positive: NEST automated buyback mechanism deployed but not yet triggered due to revenue baseline; discretionary buybacks executed two batches, ~10.03M LDO acquired, reducing circulating supply ~1%. Lido Earn expanded: EarnETH at 90.6k ETH, EarnUSD stablecoin vault launched with $32.1M TVL. DAO take rate hit record 6.10% in May. Treasury rose to ~$121.3M by Aug 25 as ETH recovered.

Negative: H1 net loss of $4.45M (incl. Kelp one-off), USD revenue hit by 47% ETH price decline. Only 5.7% of net new staking captured; institutional flows went elsewhere. NEST budget negative; Sep 9 checkpoint skipped buyback. Entry queue ~33 days, APR down to 2.59%. Earn revenue only $0.54M ARR due to fee waivers.
