About Babylon
Babylon is a Bitcoin staking protocol that enables BTC holders to lock their native bitcoins directly on the Bitcoin mainnet via CLTV timelock scripts, providing economic security to PoS chains while retaining self-custody. Its core value proposition is "self-custodial staking": users' BTC never leaves the mainnet, requires no bridging, wrapping, or third-party custody, and can be verifiably slashed if the delegated finality provider commits a provable offense (e.g., double signing). This addresses the long-standing pain point of Bitcoin's idle capital—previously, using BTC in DeFi meant trusting custodians (like WBTC) or bridges, which introduced significant counterparty risks. Babylon solves this by making BTC a native collateral asset without trust assumptions.
In the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), Babylon has advanced its integration with Aave: a temperature check proposal was submitted on May 25 to bring native BTC as collateral to Aave V4 via "Trustless BTCVaults," with two new spokes (a lending core and a liquidation settlement module) proposed for Ethereum mainnet. The mainnet TVL has remained in the hundreds of thousands of BTC range, with several Cosmos ecosystem chains using Babylon as a supplemental security layer. However, no malicious slashing event has occurred on mainnet yet, meaning the mechanism remains "usable but not battle-tested under extreme conditions." The sustainability of yields and the growth of the secured chain ecosystem are still to be observed over 1–2 years.
Babylon's key milestones include: a $15M funding round led by a16z Crypto (Feb 2024), marking early institutional recognition. The mainnet launch of Babylon Genesis (2025) established a Bitcoin-staking L1. Aave V4 integration proposal (Jan 2026) enables native BTC collateral without bridges, a DeFi breakthrough. Kraken's staking service integration (Dec 2025) brought institutional adoption. Upbit listing (Feb 2026) expanded Asian market access. These events highlight the evolution from funding to infrastructure to cross-chain DeFi and exchange adoption.
