About Lombard
Lombard is a Bitcoin DeFi (BTCFi) protocol focused on bringing Bitcoin into decentralized finance. Its core business is the issuance and management of LBTC, a yield-bearing liquid staking token fully backed by BTC 1:1. Users deposit BTC, which is staked via the Babylon protocol to earn Bitcoin-denominated yield, and receive LBTC in return. LBTC maintains composability across DeFi protocols, enabling activities like lending, borrowing, and liquidity provision. In October 2025, Lombard acquired BTC.b, the official bridged Bitcoin on Avalanche, providing a non-yield-bearing option for neutral liquidity use. The protocol also includes a Bitcoin Earn vault, Smart Accounts for institutional users, and a developer SDK for integration.
The market pain point Lombard addresses is the massive underutilization of Bitcoin, estimated at over $1.3 trillion sitting idle. Before Lombard, there were few ways to generate yield on Bitcoin without trusting centralized custodians. Lombard's solution combines transparent custody via a 14-member institutional validator consortium, cross-chain infrastructure powered by Chainlink's CCIP, and automated yield strategies. Its competitive edge lies in market leadership: over 70% market share of yield-bearing BTC tokens and more than $3 billion in BTC onboarded.
In the last six months (March to September 2026), Lombard's key developments include the BARD token launch in early March, which saw a 60% price surge. By March 2026, approximately 73% of BARD supply remained locked, with a scheduled unlock of 30 million tokens on March 18. In July 2026, Lombard introduced the Bitcoin Onchain Credit Strategy, enabling regulated institutions to borrow stablecoins using Bitcoin as collateral through an underwriting mechanism, with Flow Traders as the pilot partner.
Potential concerns include the 7-9 day unbonding period for converting LBTC back to BTC, which limits liquidity. Token unlock schedules may create short-term sell pressure, and cross-chain bridge risks remain an industry-wide consideration. As of early 2026, no major security incidents have been publicly reported.
Lombard partnered with Bitwise to unlock $500 billion in institutional BTC custody for yield generation and collateralized lending, marking a key step toward institutional-scale Bitcoin DeFi.
Flow Traders piloted Lombard’s Bitcoin-backed stablecoin lending and credit strategy, validating real-world utility of BTC assets in DeFi credit markets.
