About Walrus

Walrus is a decentralized storage and data availability protocol built on the Sui network. Its core business is providing verifiable blob storage for large files and high-frequency writes, targeting AI agents, dApps, and data-intensive applications.

Its core competitiveness lies in the Red Stuff erasure coding scheme, which uses two-dimensional encoding to achieve self-healing recovery with bandwidth proportional to lost data. It is the first protocol supporting storage challenges in asynchronous networks, preventing adversaries from exploiting network delays to fake storage. Walrus also introduces a multi-stage epoch change protocol to handle node churn without service interruption.

Market pain points addressed include high costs and low reliability of traditional decentralized storage, lack of verifiability, and the difficulty for AI agents to persist memory in a trustless way. Walrus solves these with low overhead, high availability, and on-chain proofs of availability.

In the past six months (2026-03-01 to 2026-09-01), Walrus launched MemWal, an SDK for building AI agents with persistent memory, and its storage volume exceeded 450 TB, surpassing Arweave. However, its storage node distribution is relatively concentrated geographically, and its dependency on the Sui ecosystem poses a concentration risk.

Walrus, a decentralized storage and data availability protocol developed by Mysten Labs, the team behind Sui, has progressed through several key milestones. Its mainnet officially launched on March 27, 2025, marking the protocol's transition from testnet to production. Notably, Walrus became the first decentralized data platform with access control, enabling programmable storage through smart contracts. In a significant institutional endorsement, Grayscale launched the Walrus Trust Fund, providing traditional investors with exposure to the protocol's native token, WAL. The token itself was listed on major exchanges, with Binance introducing WAL spot trading, a perpetual contract, and a HODLer airdrop event. Additionally, Walrus announced Crypto Guard, a security product designed to enhance data protection. These developments—from mainnet deployment, institutional trust products, exchange listings, to security innovations—represent foundational steps in establishing Walrus as a viable decentralized storage solution with long-term ecosystem potential.
