About Sui
Sui is a Layer 1 written in Move that uses an object-centric data model and parallel execution to reach sub-second finality at high throughput, aimed at high-frequency trading, consumer apps and AI agents. It targets the ceiling on throughput and fee predictability found in sequentially executed chains. In its core design, Move's explicit modeling of asset ownership and permissions lets objects be owned, split and composed directly, and transactions declare the objects they touch before running in parallel, with a DAG-based consensus mechanism keeping latency low.
The trade-off is that Move's tooling and developer base remain smaller than the EVM ecosystem, and historical security incidents around bridges and new contracts have been more concentrated. Applications must weigh performance against ecosystem maturity, and as a younger L1 its decentralization and long-term censorship resistance remain under continuous market scrutiny.
In late 2021, the ex-Meta Diem team founded Mysten Labs to build Sui and in December raised a $36M Series A led by a16z.
In September 2022, Sui developer Mysten Labs closed a $300M Series B at a $2B valuation.
On May 3, 2023, Sui's mainnet launched, using Move and an object-centric model for high throughput and sub-second finality.
In 2024, Sui deployed the Mysticeti consensus upgrade, cutting owned-object latency by ~80%.
In October 2024, Sui integrated native USDC, improving stablecoin liquidity.
In November 2024, VanEck listed a SUI exchange-traded note in Europe.
In October 2025, Sui's TVL peaked near $2.6B.
Ecosystem milestones: At Sui Basecamp (October 7-8), the network set a record stress-test throughput of 40.6 million TPS using programmable tunnels, six times its prior 6.4 million record; Samsung Wallet will bring USDC on Sui to 82 million Galaxy devices in the U.S.; and the Bitcoin-finance protocol Hashi secured over $500 million in institutional commitments ahead of its phased October mainnet rollout.
Leadership & capital: Co-founder Evan Cheng stepped down as CEO to become CTO and lead a new AI unit, with president Kevin Boon taking over as CEO, while Move language creator Sam Blackshear left to join Anthropic. U.S. SUI ETFs posted five consecutive weeks of net inflows totaling about 14 million SUI; SUI rallied roughly 50% in a month into early October before falling back to around $0.98.
In 2026, Sui launched protocol-level "gasless stablecoin transfers," letting users move stablecoins peer-to-peer without holding SUI at $0 fees, alongside the new Address Balances account system. On June 18, Seal MPC went live on mainnet, using a 5/8 node committee for decentralized multi-party computation to deliver programmable privacy for AI agents and enterprise data. The July v1.74.1 upgrade fixed node stability issues and enabled zero-gas transaction simulation.
Future strategy and roadmap: Sui treats post-quantum work as a long-term moat, but its nearer battleground is stablecoins and agent payments: stablecoin transfers on the network passed $1 trillion since August 2025, zero-fee transfers and private payments land in 2026, and Agent Payments lets AI agents pay per call within preset budgets, with Alibaba Cloud already integrated and Samsung Wallet putting USDC on 82 million Galaxy devices in the US. It aims to deploy post-quantum signatures on mainnet ahead of the EU's 2030 requirement and courts the Bitcoin ecosystem by publishing its quantum research; the cost is that January's mainnet stall exposed consensus-layer reliability, so scaling and uptime must arrive together. Developer activity grew 200% in a year, the confidence behind that agent-economy bet.
Sui's core team comes from Mysten Labs, where Evan Cheng is co-founder, CEO and CTO. He began in compiler and LLVM work at Apple, then led research and development for Move and the Diem execution layer at Meta's Novi team, before leaving with colleagues to found Mysten Labs in 2021. After Sam Blackshear's departure in August 2026 he took direct control of the technical side and now chairs the engineering sync himself.
Adeniyi Abiodun is co-founder and CPO, with earlier engineering and programme roles at Oracle, VMware and JPMorgan Chase, handling partnerships and recruiting. George Danezis is co-founder and chief scientist, a professor at University College London researching privacy and distributed systems, and author of the Narwhal and Bullshark protocols. Sam Blackshear, author of the Move language, left for Anthropic in August 2026 but remains an adviser. Christian Thompson is managing director of the Sui Foundation.
