About Lighthouse.Storage
Lighthouse.Storage is a decentralized permanent storage protocol built on IPFS, Filecoin, and Walrus. It offers an app, SDK, CLI, and dedicated gateways for uploading, retrieving, and sharing files. Core features include client-side encryption, token-gated access (EVM, Solana, Cosmos, Passkeys), and content-addressed CIDs that make data tamper-evident.
Its core value proposition is verifiable permanence: files are addressed by their own hash, so any alteration is mathematically detectable. This suits AI memory, large datasets, media, and backups. The platform is chain-agnostic, letting builders store data without managing storage deals directly.
It solves the problem of temporary, centralized cloud storage by providing immutable, verifiable data persistence. For sensitive data, encryption and on-chain access control ensure only authorized parties can decrypt. However, it is not a full S3 replacement—it lacks granular IAM, lifecycle rules, and enterprise SLAs. Gateway dependence still affects performance, and mutability is harder since updates create new hashes. Compliance can also break for personal data.
In the past six months (March–September 2026), Lighthouse added Walrus support (blob storage with erasure coding) with no migration or code changes, launched Backup-as-a-Service for AI agents (incremental DB backups, Go SDK, content-addressed chunking), and introduced tiered custom gateways: free plans get a custom URL, while the main gateway is now limited to paid plans to prevent resource abuse. The product also saw UI/UX updates emphasizing permanence and privacy. Note: this project is distinct from Lighthouse by Sigma Prime, an Ethereum consensus client.
Key progress (Mar–Sep 2026):
Mar: Mitigated a bot attack peaking at over 1M requests/hour on the gateway; joined Simplicity Group accelerator providing permanent storage for AI-native builders.
May: Launched AI Backups for autonomous agent data; enabled Cardano × Filecoin integration built on Lighthouse, offering end-to-end encryption and perpetual retention; introduced x402 pay-per-use uploads via Filecoin, letting agents pay in USDC on Base without human intervention.
Jun: Added Walrus (by Mysten Labs) as a storage layer, providing blob storage and erasure coding while preserving existing CIDs, gateways, and SDKs—targeting AI memory, large datasets, and media. Weekly SDK installs surpassed 2,500, the highest among IPFS/Filecoin SDKs.
Future direction:
Deepening AI agent memory: verifiable, persistent primitives (remember/recall/forget) with MCP integration for native storage access.
Dual-backend architecture: Walrus for low-latency interactive workloads, Filecoin for archival economics; encrypted memory support is next (currently unencrypted). Extending x402 autonomous payment rails for machine-to-machine storage.
