About Celestia
Celestia is a modular blockchain network that focuses exclusively on the data availability (DA) layer. Unlike monolithic chains that handle execution, settlement, and data all at once, Celestia separates these functions. Rollups can publish their transaction data to Celestia, which guarantees the data is available and verifiable by anyone through lightweight nodes using data availability sampling. This lowers the cost of launching new rollups and reduces data publishing expenses significantly.
Its core value proposition is scalable data availability. By decoupling consensus from execution, Celestia allows block sizes to grow while keeping verification lightweight. This directly addresses the bottleneck of monolithic chains, where every node must process every transaction, limiting throughput and driving up fees. Celestia's design enables high-throughput data publishing at a fraction of the cost of general-purpose chains like Ethereum.
In the past six months (February to August 2026), Celestia has continued to operate its mainnet, which has been live since October 2023, secured by around 96 validators. The network's capacity remains vastly underutilized, with only about 0.05% of its data throughput being used. This indicates that while the technology is mature, adoption is still in its early stages. A notable development is the Fibre testnet, which demonstrated a real-world throughput of 1 Terabit per second across distributed nodes, showcasing the network's potential for future scaling. However, adoption remains highly concentrated, with one rollup (Eclipse) accounting for roughly 84% of daily blob throughput. The TIA token has also experienced a significant price decline, dropping about 98% from its late 2024 peak, reflecting the gap between technical capability and market demand. Competition from Ethereum's ongoing blob scaling upgrades continues to narrow Celestia's cost advantage over time.
Celestia's key milestones include acquiring Sovereign Labs to enhance its modular stack, the Celestia Foundation purchasing all remaining TIA from Polychain for $62.5M to stabilize token economics, launching the mamo-1 testnet, VanEck listing a TIA ETN in Europe, and partnering on the first privacy-first DEX. The co-founder also confirmed over $100M in reserves, ensuring 6+ years of runway.
