About Sovereign
Sovereign is a framework (SDK) for building application-specific rollups—custom blockchains that inherit security from a base layer. Its core business is providing modular, plug-and-play components: developers can freely choose a data availability layer (like Celestia or Bitcoin) and a zero-knowledge proof system (like RISC Zero or SP1), while the SDK handles the rest. The main selling point is flexibility and interoperability: rollups built on Sovereign can easily bridge to each other and share a unified proof aggregation layer, avoiding the lock-in of single-vendor stacks.
The market pain it addresses is twofold. First, general-purpose chains cannot meet the low latency and high throughput demanded by advanced applications (e.g., high-frequency trading or prediction markets). Second, existing rollup frameworks often force developers into specific DA layers or VM choices, creating fragmentation and high migration costs. Sovereign solves this by letting teams customize execution rules, transaction ordering, and even gas logic, while keeping the ability to switch infrastructure with minimal code changes.
In the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), the project was acquired by Celestia Labs, with the team integrated into Celestia's engineering org. The SDK has been used in production by Relay (a cross-chain bridge processing over $850M in volume) and Bullet (a perpetuals exchange with 30,000+ TPS and 1.2ms order execution). A known limitation is that soft confirmations rely on a centralized sequencer, which introduces a temporary trust assumption—a tradeoff the project acknowledges and is actively working to mitigate.
Sovereign Labs was founded by former Ethereum core developer Cem Özer to build a sovereign zk-rollup SDK. In November 2022, it raised $7.4 million in a seed round led by Haun Ventures, with participation from 1kx, Robot Ventures, Maven 11, and Plaintext Capital. The SDK aims to abstract zero-knowledge details, allowing developers to write in Rust and compile to zkVM, with features like proof aggregation for cross-chain interoperability and support for any data availability layer. In 2023, the team published a three-phase roadmap: research, initial implementation, and hardening, targeting a mainnet by late 2024. A pivotal milestone occurred in 2025 when Celestia Labs acquired Sovereign Labs, integrating the SDK into its stack to offer a full-stack solution for high-performance custom chains. This acquisition marked a strategic consolidation, enabling Celestia to provide end-to-end infrastructure from L1 to application layers, with Sovereign's technology powering projects like Relay and Bullet.
Major progress in the past six months: In July 2026, Celestia Labs acquired Sovereign Labs. Sovereign Labs co-founder Preston Evans became CTO of Celestia. The Sovereign SDK is positioned as the industry-leading framework for application-specific high-performance blockchains, powering Relay (cross-chain bridge with over $8.5B volume) and Bullet (perpetual DEX with 1.2ms clearing and 30,000+ TPS). After the acquisition, Celestia Labs gains full-stack blockchain engineering capability from L1 to execution. Future focus: celestia will combine the Sovereign SDK with its Fibre layer (capable of supporting 625M TPS) to offer end-to-end custom blockchain infrastructure for mainstream apps and enterprises. Officially stated roadmap: as Hyperliquid, Polymarket, and Robinhood move to custom chains, the trend toward application-specific chains will accelerate, and Celestia Labs aims to be the core infrastructure partner for this shift.
