About Zeta Markets

Zeta Markets is a Solana-native DeFi derivatives platform that operates a fully on-chain central limit order book (CLOB), offering perpetual futures on SOL, BTC, ETH, and other major assets with up to 20x leverage, plus European-style options that are cash-settled in USDC. It employs a cross-margin system where the entire account balance serves as collateral across all positions.

Its core narrative revolves around providing a CEX-like trading experience entirely on-chain. The CLOB model allows for direct buyer-seller matching and limit order placement, which differs from pool-based competitors like Jupiter Perps or Drift. To address Solana's L1 congestion issues—which caused high revert rates (72% at times) and 400ms delays—Zeta pivoted to build Bullet, a trading-optimized L2 launched on September 29, 2025, using Celestia DA and ZK proofs to achieve 1.2ms latencies.

The market pain points addressed are L1 scalability limits and the trade-off between decentralization and speed. By moving to an L2, Zeta aims to deliver faster execution and congestion-proof scalability.

In the past six months (2026-03-03 to 2026-09-03), a significant negative development occurred: the Zeta foundation announced the wind-down of the $ZEX token, canceling the previously promised 1:1 migration to $BULLET. The original Zeta Markets platform ceased operations on May 1, 2025, and the foundation stated that maintaining $ZEX required ongoing market-making and listing costs with no active product. A snapshot of liquidity and staking balances was taken on July 10, covering approximately 187.8 million $ZEX across 23,992 wallets. Exchanges like Bybit and KuCoin delisted the token. The foundation offered an optional permanent lock-up program (until November 13, 2026) but explicitly stated it confers no rights to future tokens. $ZEX dropped about 63% post-announcement and is down over 98% from its all-time high.

Zeta Markets, a Solana-based DeFi derivatives platform, has evolved through several key milestones. The native token was renamed from Z to ZEX, marking a strategic rebranding. In May 2024, the project unveiled Zeta X (ZX), a Solana-based Layer 2 solution designed to deliver CEX-like performance on-chain, with mainnet targeted for Q1 2025. The token generation event and airdrop details were released, including a sybil review process to ensure fair distribution. Over 13,000 users qualified for staking 20 million ZEX, and the Genesis Epoch trading rewards of 8 million ZEX became claimable on July 25, 2024. Notably, 91% of the ZEX airdrop has been claimed, with unclaimed tokens returned to the community. These events highlight Zeta's focus on tokenomics, scalability, and community alignment, positioning it as a leading perpetual DEX on Solana.
