About Solana

Solana is a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain for DeFi, NFT and high-frequency application developers, supporting on-chain trading and settlement with low fees and high throughput. It targets the industry pain point of reconciling concurrency with low latency on a decentralized network, avoiding Ethereum-style gas congestion and slow finality. Its core combines Proof of History timestamp ordering with the TowerBFT consensus mechanism, uses the Sealevel parallel runtime to raise execution efficiency, and relies on multiple clients including Firedancer for resilience; on-chain programs use the Gulf Stream mempool and Turbine block propagation for matching and broadcast.

This performance focus creates dependence on a few high-end validators' hardware and bandwidth, and the network suffered repeated early outages, making stability a competitive boundary against other chains. In October 2026, the Alpenglow consensus upgrade activated on mainnet, replacing TowerBFT with the Votor voting mechanism and compressing transaction finality to roughly 150 milliseconds.

Updated: Oct 30, 2026

In 2017, Anatoly Yakovenko published Solana's Proof of History (PoH) whitepaper, proposing verifiable timestamp ordering for high throughput.

In 2018, Solana Labs was formally founded, building its stack around PoH and Tower BFT and committing to a high-performance Layer 1.

In March 2020, the Solana mainnet beta launched, attracting early DeFi and NFT developers with low fees and high TPS.

In June 2021, Solana closed a $314M private token sale; its ecosystem expanded rapidly and SOL and TVL surged together.

In September 2021, Solana suffered its first major outage, exposing stability risks and later prompting client diversification.

In 2021, DeFi and NFT protocols launched densely on Solana, and daily transactions briefly surpassed Ethereum.

In 2022, Solana Mobile announced the Saga phone, exploring a mobile crypto entry point.

In November 2022, the FTX collapse hit Solana hard; SOL fell about 75% and many projects and funds exited.

From 2023, Solana recovered; Visa adopted its network for USDC settlement and institutional confidence returned.

In 2024, Solana returned to growth on the meme-coin and DePIN wave, with ecosystem activity and developers rebounding.

In 2024, Solana's stablecoin supply and DEX volume hit records, making it the most active chain outside Ethereum.

In March 2025, Trump proposed adding Solana's SOL to a U.S. crypto strategic reserve, boosting its mainstream narrative.

In 2025, spot Solana ETFs launched, giving institutions a compliant allocation channel.

In December 2025, Solana's Firedancer validator client went live on mainnet, raising throughput and resilience while reducing single-client risk.

Consensus upgrade: The Alpenglow consensus upgrade is set to activate on Solana mainnet on October 21, 2026 (epoch 1064), replacing TowerBFT with the Votor voting protocol to cut transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds; block time was also reduced from 400ms to 200ms in four stages completed in October, while reported on-chain TPS may drop by about 60% as validator votes move off-chain.

Ecosystem & capital flows: Solana tokenized RWA market grew roughly 600% year over year to about $4.3 billion, with deepening partnerships with Fiserv, State Street and other institutions; staking-enabled spot SOL ETFs surpassed $1 billion in AUM by April, but recorded ten consecutive days of net outflows in mid-October with weekly withdrawals near $25.5 million, and SOL trades around $105.

Updated: Oct 30, 2026

On October 21, 2026, Solana's Alpenglow upgrade activated on mainnet at epoch 1064, replacing TowerBFT with Votor and cutting finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds; the handover completed at slot 459,653,000 after TowerBFT ran for about 5,000 additional slots. Validators had to run Agave 4.3.x, since Firedancer and Frankendancer did not support the switch, and only Firedancer v26.10.2, released October 14, can operate under Alpenglow. BLS key registration went live on mainnet on July 8, the validator admission ticket took effect on July 22, and slot time was lowered in stages from 400 to 200 milliseconds between August 21 and October 9.

Institutional flows expanded in parallel: US spot SOL ETFs, launched October 28, 2025, had drawn about $1.158 billion in cumulative net inflows by August 2026, and Morgan Stanley listed MSOL on NYSE Arca on July 28 with a 0.14% fee, the first staking-enabled spot SOL ETP from a US bank-affiliated asset manager. Corporate treasuries resumed accumulation after July, with 22 entities holding about 19.3 million SOL worth roughly $1.46 billion, led by Forward Industries at about 7.8 million SOL.

Solana's Internet Capital Markets roadmap moves the competitive axis from throughput to order-flow quality: BAM lets builders define sequencing and pre-execution privacy so onchain central limit order books can match centralized venues, DoubleZero's fiber and Rotor's single-hop relay push latency toward exchange levels, and multiple concurrent leaders plus ACE in 2027 would write those ordering rules into the protocol. The other half of the moat is distribution: roughly $16.4 billion in stablecoin supply, a 97% share of cumulative tokenized-equity spot volume, spot ETF assets above $1 billion, and a Jito partnership with Nasdaq-listed Solana Company to run BAM validators across Asia-Pacific for institutional staking and market making. Anza and Jito must finish validator onboarding and audits before opening BAM to third-party builders.

Solana is built around co-founders Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. Yakovenko was born in Kyiv, moved to the US at seven, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He spent nearly seven years on embedded systems at Qualcomm, then moved to infrastructure at Dropbox, and in 2013 co-founded Mesosphere as CTO. He wrote the Proof of History design in 2017 and started Solana Labs with Gokal in 2018; he remains CEO and runs the core protocol group.

Gokal studied at the University of Pennsylvania and led client work at Omada Health before becoming COO in 2018, owning hiring and external relations. Stephen Akridge, the third co-founder, also came from Qualcomm and left in 2021. Lily Liu became foundation president in 2021 after serving as CFO of 21.co, overseeing grants and developer relations. Austin Federa, who ran foundation strategy, left in late 2024 to start DoubleZero.

Solana has recently seen two key team additions. In March 2026, Taylor Fox joined as Consumer Lead, focusing on driving end-user applications and growth. In June 2026, veteran security expert Michael Coates took on the role of CIO, bringing extensive CISO experience from Mozilla and Twitter to strengthen network and ecosystem security. These moves signal Solana's dual focus on expanding its user base and reinforcing security governance.
