About Arbitrum
Arbitrum is an Ethereum Optimistic Rollup scaling solution that executes off-chain and settles on-chain using fraud proofs, giving developers and users a low-fee, high-throughput EVM-compatible environment. It addresses Ethereum mainnet's cost and congestion, batching transactions through a sequencer while a challenge period and fraud proofs secure finality, with the AnyTrust variant cutting fees via a data-availability committee and the Orbit framework enabling custom L3s on top. Relative to Ethereum mainnet, it pushes computation and storage off-chain and submits proofs only when disputed, cutting per-transaction cost by one to two orders of magnitude.
The trade-off is exchanging withdrawal delay from fraud proofs for low-cost scaling, at the cost of ARB being a pure governance token with no staking yield, no fee switch and no buyback. Network revenue flows to the DAO treasury rather than holders, and large monthly unlocks keep supply pressure on while ZK rollups press the competitive front.
In 2018, a Princeton team founded Offchain Labs to build Arbitrum and proposed optimistic rollups.
On August 31, 2021, Arbitrum One's mainnet launched, becoming a leading Ethereum L2.
In August 2022, the Nitro upgrade moved Arbitrum to a Geth execution layer, raising throughput about 10x.
In March 2023, Arbitrum launched the ARB token and DAO, with a ~$1.2B airdrop handing governance to the community.
In 2024, Arbitrum Stylus went live, supporting Rust, C and C++ contracts.
In 2024, Arbitrum Orbit let anyone launch L3s, cementing its L2 lead.
In 2025, Arbitrum held over 40% of the Ethereum L2 market.
Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum technology, launched in July 2026 and scaled quickly: in early September it generated $3.75 million in daily fees and over $1.5 billion in daily DEX volume, helping ARB rally roughly 159% in two months from its June low of $0.07 to around $0.20 by early October. Arbitrum DAO reported $6.19 million of income for H1 2026, including about $360,000 of licensing fees in July (35% of that month's revenue).
Token-side pressure persists: about 92.65 million ARB unlock each month (48.5 million investors, 32.1 million team, 12 million treasury) through early 2027, with the next unlock on October 16. ARB remains a pure governance token with no staking yield, fee switch, or buyback-and-burn; network revenue flows to the DAO treasury rather than holders, and annualized revenue of roughly $25 million falls far short of about $228 million per year in unlock supply.
On July 1, 2026 Robinhood Chain, built on Arbitrum Orbit, launched its mainnet and routes 10% of net revenue back to the ecosystem, with 8% to the DAO treasury and 2% to the Developer Guild; in July alone it contributed about $360,000, or 35% of the DAO's monthly income. On September 1 the chain posted $3.75 million in single-day fees, and Arbitrum's September revenue hit a record $5.45 million, of which $4.75 million came from Orbit licensing.
On August 20 the ArbOS Elara upgrade shipped, adding enterprise-chain compliance tooling and quadrupling smart contract capacity, and on September 25 Arbitrum became the first blockchain to reach 7,000 onchain RWAs. On September 4 a single-sequencer failure halted Robinhood Chain block production for at least 14 minutes, and co-founder Steven Goldfeder acknowledged that decentralising the sequencer is the next step. DAO income was $6.19 million in the first half, and Standard Chartered initiated coverage of ARB on September 15.
Arbitrum's Future strategy and roadmap: Arbitrum's revenue is turning into a single-point dependency chart: about a third of the DAO's monthly income comes from a chain whose sequencer Robinhood operates alone, where the fraud-proof challenger whitelist holds two parties and upgrades need seven of eight keys, so governance can neither order transactions nor prevent an outage. What would re-rate ARB is a fee switch, yet the staking proposal that passed distributes no fees to holders, and USD 125 million of non-ARB assets plus treasury income stay on the DAO's books. Elara's protocol-level compliance filtering is the precondition for regulated brokers, setting Arbitrum apart from Base's Coinbase distribution and Optimism's Superchain revenue share as three different ways of collecting rent.
Arbitrum is the work of Offchain Labs' three founders. Ed Felten is a Princeton computer science professor who served as deputy US chief technology officer and as the FTC's chief technologist; in 2018 he started the company with two of his students and became chief scientist, owning the protocol's security model. Steven Goldfeder is CEO, holds a Princeton PhD on cryptography and smart contract privacy, worked with Ari Juels at Cornell, and runs organisational growth and external affairs.
Harry Kalodner is CTO, also a Princeton systems PhD, and owns engineering of the sequencer, the bridge and the Nitro upgrade. Chief strategy officer A.J. Warner handles policy and institutional relationships. After governance was handed over in 2023, the foundation and the DAO each built standing teams, with the foundation run by a small board that reviews grants. Engineering is in protocol, infrastructure and application support groups; the three founders meet weekly on technical matters.
Arbitrum is an Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution based on Optimistic Rollup. A recent team change: Growth Lead Marcin Pawel has departed. He joined in February 2025 and left in May 2026, having led growth marketing and ecosystem partnerships. According to his LinkedIn, he has joined onchain analytics platform Nansen to help advance its AI-powered financial intelligence platform for onchain investors and Hyperliquid traders. No other public hires or departures were reported.
