About Decentraland
Decentraland is a blockchain-based virtual world where users own virtual land (LAND) and digital assets as NFTs. Its core business revolves around virtual real estate, user-generated content, social events, and an in-world economy powered by the MANA token. The platform's key differentiator is true digital ownership: all assets are recorded on the Ethereum blockchain, giving users full control without relying on a central company.
The market pain point it addresses is the lack of ownership in traditional gaming and social platforms. On platforms like Roblox or Steam, users spend time and money creating or buying virtual items, but the platform operator can change rules, revoke access, or shut down services at any time. Decentraland solves this by making assets permanent and user-controlled, while governance is handled by a DAO where MANA holders vote on platform decisions.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), Decentraland expanded access by launching on the Epic Games Store and releasing an Android app in April 2026. Monthly unique visitors reached approximately 847,000 by late 2025, with a 23% increase in daily active users after the 2.0 desktop client launch. The platform hosted over 300 community events in January 2026. However, the MANA token price remains about 98% below its November 2021 peak, reflecting a disconnect between platform growth and token valuation. Additionally, Meta's retreat from the metaverse in early 2026 contrasts with Decentraland's continued operation, though daily active human users are still estimated below 5,000.
Decentraland, initiated in 2015 by Ari Meilich and Esteban Ordano, began as a conceptual experiment exploring blockchain-driven virtual experiences. Its first milestone was the 2017 ICO, raising $24 million in 35 seconds, followed by the LAND auction system that established its core NFT-based virtual real estate model. The platform officially launched in February 2020, transitioning to DAO governance where MANA and LAND holders vote on protocol rules. In 2021, user growth surged 3300% to 800,000 registered users, with MANA appreciating over 4100%, cementing its position as a leading metaverse project. A significant technical evolution occurred in October 2024 with the desktop client public beta, shifting from browser-based limitations to a Unity-powered standalone application with enhanced performance, dynamic lighting, and creator tools—a foundational step toward future VR and mobile expansion. Throughout its history, Decentraland has maintained its vision of a community-owned virtual world, with its DAO treasury and land economy representing enduring pillars of its decentralized governance model.
