About Rocket Pool
Rocket Pool is a decentralized Ethereum staking protocol that operates as a two-sided marketplace. Users can stake any amount from 0.01 ETH and receive rETH, a liquid staking token that accrues value over time. Node operators run validators with a 4 ETH bond, supplemented by pooled funds from rETH holders, and earn commissions plus optional RPL rewards.
Its core value proposition is permissionless access. Unlike major competitors that rely on whitelisted operators, anyone meeting the bond requirement can run a node, distributing validators across roughly 1,500 independent operators worldwide. This directly addresses Ethereum's centralization risk, where a few entities control a large share of staked ETH. Rocket Pool also solves the high barrier of 32 ETH for solo staking, enabling small holders to participate while maintaining decentralization.
In the past six months, the Saturn I upgrade (February 2026) lowered node bond requirements from 8 to 4 ETH, introduced Megapools to reduce gas costs and simplify large-scale validator management, and made RPL optional collateral with a fee switch directing real protocol revenue to RPL stakers. rETH supply reached approximately 329,000 tokens, with over 500,000 ETH locked in the protocol. However, RPL has declined roughly 98% from its April 2023 peak, reflecting persistent market underperformance despite the new revenue model.
Rocket Pool was conceived in 2016 and launched on mainnet in October 2021, becoming Ethereum's most decentralized liquid staking protocol. Key milestones with long-term significance include:
The Redstone upgrade (2022): Adapted to The Merge, introduced the smoothing pool to balance node operator reward volatility.
The Atlas upgrade (April 2023): Enabled validator withdrawals, reduced node collateral from 16 ETH to 8 ETH, tripled protocol capacity, and cut gas costs by 40%.
The Saturn One upgrade (February 2026): Further lowered the threshold to 4 ETH, introduced the MEGAPOOL architecture to reduce gas costs, and activated the RPL Fee Switch, distributing protocol revenue to RPL stakers.
Additionally, in 2025 the U.S. SEC accused Rocket Pool's staking program of being a security, sparking industry-wide debate on staking compliance.
These upgrades consistently lowered participation barriers and enhanced decentralization, holding lasting significance for the Ethereum ecosystem.
