About Powerledger
Powerledger is an Australian blockchain platform for environmental commodities and energy trading. Its core business includes peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading, renewable energy certificate (REC) trading via TraceX, 24/7 clean energy portfolio tracking, and carbon credit traceability. The platform records every transaction on-chain, enabling direct buyer-seller settlement without intermediaries.
The market pain points it addresses are clear: traditional energy markets rely on centralized utilities with opaque pricing, 30-90 day settlement cycles, and fragmented REC/carbon credit systems prone to double counting. Powerledger solves these by providing real-time settlement (seconds on Solana), transparent and immutable transaction records, and automated verification of renewable energy attributes. Its modular design allows utilities, microgrids, and property developers to deploy only needed products.
Its core narrative is "democratizing the energy market" through blockchain. The POWR token acts as a platform bond — enterprises escrow POWR to access services, reducing circulating supply as adoption grows. It is not a hardware or design tool; it operates as a backend layer for energy data verification and settlement, requiring smart meters and regulatory approval in most jurisdictions.
In the past six months (2026-03-12 to 2026-09-12), Powerledger completed its multi-chain deployment to Solana via Wormhole NTT, enabling high-throughput, low-fee transactions suited for real-time energy trading. As of March 2026, circulating supply was 441 million POWR (44.1% of total), market cap around $122 million, ranking ~280th. Negative developments: deployment remains slower than standard software due to utility integration complexity, and the platform still depends on regulatory approvals and existing smart meter infrastructure in most regions.
Powerledger was founded in 2016 in Perth by Dr. Jemma Green and John Bulich. In May 2017, it raised over $34 million via ICO, selling POWR tokens at $0.0838. In August 2017, it launched the world's first blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading pilot in Busselton, Australia. In 2021, it migrated from Ethereum to Solana, launching a permissioned chain. In October 2024, it completed integration with Solana mainnet, making POWR available on both Ethereum and Solana, and ceased operating its own SVM blockchain. The platform also pioneered the dual-token model (POWR/Sparkz) and Ecochain, a private PoS blockchain optimized for energy markets, enabling high-frequency settlement and renewable energy certificate trading.
