About Livepeer
Livepeer is a decentralized video streaming network built on Ethereum. Its core business is transcoding and distributing live video through a network of GPU operators, and it has recently expanded into AI-driven video processing. Instead of relying on centralized servers, broadcasters pay node operators in the network to convert video into different formats and deliver it to viewers, making the infrastructure more open and cost-efficient.
The main problem Livepeer solves is the high cost and centralized control of traditional video streaming infrastructure. Conventional platforms require large data centers and often impose strict rules on content. Livepeer allows anyone to contribute computing power and earn rewards, while broadcasters only pay for what they use. This reduces barriers for small creators and enables applications that need censorship-resistant or pay-per-view video services.
In the past six months (February to August 2026), Livepeer has shifted its focus toward AI video inference. The network now supports real-time AI models, such as generating or modifying video frames, and has introduced a tool called Daydream that provides a simple API and visual workflow editor for developers. According to network data, over 70% of transaction fees now come from AI inference tasks rather than traditional transcoding, indicating a clear pivot in its business model.
One notable issue in the last two years: in 2024, the Livepeer protocol experienced a security vulnerability in its smart contract that led to a temporary loss of funds for some users. The team addressed the bug, but the incident raised concerns about the safety of decentralized infrastructure.
Livepeer, launched in 2017, is a decentralized video streaming network built on Ethereum. Its mainnet went live in May 2018, introducing a token-incentivized transcoding market where node operators (Orchestrators) provide GPU power and earn LPT tokens. In 2019, it raised $8M in Series A to expand infrastructure. A pivotal shift occurred in 2023-2024 with the announcement of Livepeer AI, transforming the network into a decentralized GPU marketplace for AI video generation and processing. This move, coupled with the 2025 launch of the Livepeer Agent (an MCP connector for AI-driven video workflows), marked its evolution beyond simple transcoding. Notably, Livepeer's inclusion in Grayscale's AI Fund (announced 2025) validated its role as a leading decentralized AI compute layer. The network's long-term significance lies in its pioneering token model for open video infrastructure, its pivot to AI compute, and its growing ecosystem of independent GPU providers.
Positive: In Q1 2026, network usage hit a record 134.4 million minutes (+71.9% QoQ), demand-side fees reached an all-time high of $257,300, with AI inference accounting for 60% of revenue; in May, rebranded as Openpeer focusing on real-time AI video; June saw the launch of Punch product.
Negative: Annual inflation rate of 26.2%, with newly minted LPT sell pressure far exceeding annual fees of ~$1M; fees are paid in ETH and LPT does not directly capture value; lags behind Render in DePIN competition (market cap about 1/8 of Render's).
