About Kusama
Kusama is a scalable, multi-chain network built as a canary network for Polkadot, providing a real economic environment for developers to test new blockchain projects before deploying to Polkadot. Its core business is offering a permissionless, rapidly iterating platform where teams can launch parachains, experiment with governance, and deploy decentralized applications. The main market pain point it addresses is the high risk and slow upgrade cycles of production blockchains, which hinder innovation. Kusama solves this by enabling faster governance, lower entry barriers, and a more flexible testing ground, allowing projects to validate ideas with real assets and users. In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), Kusama completed a major migration of core functions from the relay chain to Asset Hub, enhancing scalability and user experience. This shift moved asset transfers and balance queries to Asset Hub, reducing transaction fees and lowering the minimum balance for KSM. The network also continued to support parachain auctions and community-driven governance, maintaining its role as a hub for experimentation. However, the migration required developers to update their RPC endpoints, and some users faced temporary confusion during the transition. Despite these challenges, Kusama remains focused on enabling rapid innovation in the Web3 space, with a strong emphasis on community participation and technical experimentation.
Kusama, Polkadot's canary network, launched on August 23, 2019, as a PoA network with 6 validators run by Web3 Foundation. On September 26, 2019, it transitioned to PrePoS, expanding validator slots to 50. The network activated full governance on November 28, 2019, removing the Sudo module and enabling NPoS staking, marking its shift to a decentralized PoS network. In February 2020, KSM transfers were enabled. A significant milestone occurred in February 2024 with the activation of the BEEFY consensus protocol, enabling trustless bridges like Snowbridge to Ethereum and Hyperbridge to L2s, fulfilling Polkadot's 2016 vision of cross-chain interoperability. Kusama's governance parameters are up to four times faster than Polkadot's, allowing rapid experimentation and upgrades. It serves as a live, economically valuable testing ground for parachains, with many projects deploying there before Polkadot.
Bullish: Kusama referendum #655 passed, reducing validators from 1000 to 700, improving per-validator revenue and easing economic pressure; treasury balance kept growing, from 826,124 KSM on Jul 27 to 866,705 KSM on Aug 12, with net inflow of about 1,190 KSM per day.
Bearish: The JAM-era report noted 700 validators cost about $25.2 million per year, roughly 45.7% of market cap, with high inflation and validator subsidy pressure; community feedback indicates long-term insufficient validator income, nodes relying on subsidies, and too many validators for low activity.
