About Zora
Zora is a chain-native social network where every post can be tokenized as an ERC-20, allowing creators to monetize content directly through trading. Its core competitiveness lies in the protocol+token dual-layer design: the Zora Protocol provides open, permissionless smart contracts for creating and trading content tokens, while the ZORA token (on Base) incentivizes ecosystem activity and provides liquidity. Running on Base (an OP Stack L2), it offers near-zero gas fees, making micro-transactions feasible. Zora solves the pain point of creators relying on centralized platforms for ad revenue or brand deals—instead, attention is directly converted into tradable assets, with creators earning 1% of every trade. However, the past six months (2026-03-07 to 2026-09-07) saw significant setbacks. In February 2026, Base App stopped its Creator Rewards program and removed the Farcaster-powered social feed, shifting focus to trading and stablecoin payments. By July 2026, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong publicly admitted the content coin strategy "didn't work," saying "we messed up." The ZORA token price dropped about 95% from its August 2025 high, with market cap shrinking from ~$550M to ~$30M. The experiment also drew criticism from Base ecosystem developers for resource misallocation, and many participants suffered losses. While Zora remains operational, its near-term trajectory is uncertain.
Zora was founded in 2020 as an NFT marketplace protocol, backed by Coinbase Ventures, Paradigm, and Haun Ventures, with total funding exceeding $52 million and a peak valuation of $600 million.
In 2023, Zora launched its own Layer 2 network, Zora Network, built on the OP Stack, significantly reducing transaction costs and laying the foundation for large-scale social interactions.
In July 2024, Zora integrated with Coinbase's Base App, causing daily token creation to surge from 6,000 to nearly 50,000. That same year, Zora acquired Mint.fun, eliminating a competitor and expanding its ecosystem.
In April 2025, ZORA token airdrop and exchange listings marked a key milestone. The token launched on Binance, OKX, Upbit, and Bithumb, with the airdrop distributing 1 billion tokens (10% of total supply) to 2.4 million addresses. However, the highly concentrated allocation (65% to team and investors) and poor user experience drew criticism.
A notable technical endorsement came from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who praised the Zora app and suggested supporting Ethereum addresses for account recovery, highlighting Zora's potential in the social sector.
More recently, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong stated that content published on the Base App will automatically sync to platforms like Zora without duplication, signaling Zora's growing importance within the Base ecosystem.
Positive: Zora expanded to Base, Robinhood Chain, and Solana, launched Custom Pairs (4,000+ pairs) supporting stocks, Meme coins, etc.; rolled out Zora Agent, Tags, and CLI. In September, the new CEO announced plans to advance ZORA token buybacks and holder rewards, restart community incentives, and tie business to token value.
Negative: Protocol revenue plunged to $106.5K in Q2 2026, down >98% from the $5.64M peak in Q3 2025; last 30 days revenue was only $6,165. Team cut to <10 people; co-founder Jacob stepped down and left. $ZORA holders currently have no governance or revenue rights; buyback/reward details are undisclosed.
Jacob Horne: Co-founder & CEO. Previously a product lead at Coinbase, where he helped create USDC. Founded Zora in 2020 to tokenize media and empower creators.
Tyson Battistella: Co-founder & CTO. Former software engineer at Coinbase. Co-founded Zora in 2020, leading engineering and technical development.
Isaac N.: Head of Product. Leads product and agentic consumer crypto efforts, including the $ZORA token launch and decentralized org tools.
Zora co-founder Jacob Horne stepped down as CEO in September 2026, with fellow co-founder D. Goens taking over. Horne had held the role since April 2020 and is moving to the next phase of his career. Meanwhile, Zora underwent restructuring, reducing its team to fewer than 10 people and incorporating AI agents. The company pivoted from NFTs to creator and content coins, launching the $ZORA token in April 2026.
