About QuarkChain
QuarkChain, proposed in 2018, is a sharded public chain that splits transactions across shards by account in a two-layer design of shard layer plus root chain, with the root chain providing final confirmation for cross-shard transactions. It was known for elastic and heterogeneous sharding, letting different shards run different consensus rules and virtual machines, and its QKC token covers cross-shard fees and staking; the original pitch was higher throughput on a layer 1 without giving up a single-chain developer experience.
In May 2026 the team announced a shift from a sharded layer 1 to an Ethereum-aligned layer 2 called Super World Computer, targeting AI and data-heavy applications, moving execution onto a rollup and rewriting the client in Python. After the pivot, cross-shard messaging and root-chain confirmation are no longer the centre of the story, and value capture moves to layer 2 fees and the sequencer. On 18 June, Binance added a monitoring tag to QKC, saying it may no longer meet listing standards; QKC retains Korean won pairs on Upbit and Bithumb.
QuarkChain, launched in 2018, initially proposed a sharded multi-layer architecture to address scalability. In 2024, it pivoted to an Ethereum Layer 2, building the 'Super World Computer' on the OP Stack, integrating parallel EVM and EthStorage for on-chain storage, with a testnet live on Sepolia. The project also advanced the web3:// protocol (ERC-4804) for decentralized frontends. Key milestones include the mainnet deployment and phased rollout of the L2, aligning with Ethereum's roadmap. Despite early user metrics being modest, the focus remains on infrastructure and developer adoption, as highlighted by founder Qi Zhou at Devcon 2024.
Pivot and mainnet: In May QuarkChain repositioned from a sharded L1 to an Ethereum-aligned L2 branded the Super World Computer, targeting AI and data-heavy applications; the mainnet remains in staged testing with a phased expansion planned for the second half, and client 1.7.0 beta moved to Python 3.13 with a new storage binding.
Regulatory risk: Binance added a Monitoring Tag to QKC on June 18, warning it may no longer meet listing standards and could be delisted; QKC still keeps Korean won pairs on Upbit and Bithumb, and the team says its focus is ecosystem building rather than short-term price action.
On May 19, 2026 QuarkChain set out a pivot to an Ethereum-aligned Layer 2 pitched as a super world computer for AI and data-heavy applications: block-level access lists for parallel execution, quoted above 10 GGas/s and peaking near 14 GGas/s, EthStorage for low-cost storage, web3:// to reduce dependence on DNS and centralised hosting, and zkVM-based verification. Research on native rollups followed on September 21.
Market pressure built in parallel: Binance added a monitoring tag to QKC on June 18, said on September 29 that margin and loan support would end on October 2, and KuCoin delisted its spot pairs on October 8. The team says the second half is about staged Layer 2 rollout and developer onboarding, and treats Korea, where KRW pairs trade on Upbit and Bithumb, as an ecosystem focus rather than a short-term trading story. With little ecosystem data to show, standards contributions and client research became its main source of credibility.
QuarkChain will address the five bottlenecks of onboarding, compute, storage, access and verification first, then prove adoption through AI and data workloads, with the roadmap no longer sold on a single throughput number.
