About PEPE
PEPE is an ERC-20 memecoin issued on Ethereum in April 2023 with a supply of 420.69 trillion, no tax, no staking and no governance, and contract permissions renounced. It solves no functional problem; its value comes entirely from cultural symbolism and attention, as a frog meme endlessly remixed by a community while the token serves as a way to bet on that consensus.
The analytical frame differs from functional projects: no cash flow, no product roadmap, only holder distribution, exchange depth and topic heat. The project itself states the token has no intrinsic value, which is accurate as a disclaimer. In December 2025 its website was compromised and redirected to malware downloads — one of the few verifiable security incidents; otherwise the risk is a one-way decline when liquidity retreats, plus a highly concentrated holder base.
Major Development Milestones and Long-Term Significance of PEPE
Token Launch (2023-04): PEPE was officially launched on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token with a fixed total supply of 420.69 trillion. It was created as a tribute to the Pepe the Frog meme, positioning itself as a pure meme coin with no utility, no pre-sale, and no transaction tax. This marked the beginning of the "third-generation meme coin" narrative, aiming to succeed SHIB.
Rapid Market Entry and Exchange Listings (2023-04 to 2023-05): Within one month of launch, PEPE's market cap exceeded $400 million, entering the top 100 cryptocurrencies. It was quickly listed on major exchanges including Gate, OKX, MEXC, and Binance (2023-05-05). The Binance listing was a critical milestone that brought massive retail attention and liquidity, solidifying PEPE's position as a leading meme coin.
Multi-Signature Crisis and Team Controversy (2023-08): The team's multi-signature threshold was secretly reduced from 5/8 to 2/8, followed by the transfer of 16 trillion PEPE (approximately $16 million) to exchanges, causing a 17% price drop. This event severely damaged trust in the anonymous team. In October 2023, the team burned 6.9 trillion PEPE as a remedial measure. This incident remains a permanent red flag regarding team accountability and centralization risks.
All-Time High and Market Peak (2024-12-09): PEPE reached its all-time high of $0.00002803, with a market cap briefly surpassing $7 billion. This period marked PEPE's peak as the leading pure meme coin on Ethereum, ranking #3 in meme coin market cap after DOGE and SHIB. The rally was driven by the broader crypto bull market and meme coin speculation frenzy.
Major Exchange Expansions (2024-2025): Upbit listed PEPE on 2024-08-20, and Coinbase listed it on 2024-11-13, expanding access to Asian and US retail investors. Binance added a PEPE/JPY trading pair on 2025-01-09 and removed the seed tag on 2025-07-21, signaling increased mainstream acceptance and reduced risk warnings.
Whale Activity and Market Dynamics (2024-2025): Significant whale movements have repeatedly influenced PEPE's price. For example, a dormant whale holding PEPE since early days transferred millions of dollars worth in December 2024, causing market ripples. In 2026-02, whales accumulated ~23 trillion PEPE during a -73% drawdown period, indicating strategic accumulation by large players during market lows.
First Memecoin ETF Application (2026-04-08): Canary Capital filed an S-1 for a spot PEPE ETF, marking the world's first memecoin spot ETF application. While approval is uncertain (no CME futures, decision expected ~end of 2026), this represents a potential institutionalization milestone for PEPE and the broader meme coin category.
Recent Whale Liquidation and Positioning (2026-09): A major swing trading whale was suspected of liquidating its remaining 63.9 billion PEPE tokens with accumulated losses potentially exceeding $17.12 million. Concurrently, two wallets opened long positions with 10x leverage totaling $3.37 million, and another whale bought 80 billion PEPE again after 8 months (~$3.08 million). These events highlight the ongoing speculative nature and high volatility of PEPE as a pure sentiment-driven asset.
ETF and whales: On October 2 Canary Capital filed pre-effective amendment No. 1 to its spot PEPE ETF S-1 for a Cboe BZX listing, still awaiting SEC approval; on October 16, 4.92 trillion PEPE, about $20.2 million, moved from Poloniex to an unknown wallet, 1.19% of circulating supply.
Ownership and liquidity: The top 100 addresses hold 76.8% and 637 whale wallets control 89.9% of market value; open interest fell from a late-September peak near $400 million to about $260 million, with market cap around $1.65 billion. There is no buyback or burn.
On April 8, 2026, Canary Capital filed an S-1 for a spot PEPE ETF with the SEC, the first attempt at a pure-memecoin ETF; on October 2 it filed an amendment specifying BitGo custody, a planned Cboe BZX listing and a NAV based on the CoinDesk PEPE Benchmark Rate, with the SEC's 240-day review window pointing to a decision between late 2026 and early 2027.
On September 18, PEPE went live on Solana as a canonical SPL token via Wormhole NTT and Sunrise, with over $40M in first-day volume across DEXs including Raydium, Orca and Meteora. PEPE's contract has been immutable since its 2023 launch with no built-in features or roadmap, so its value rests on culture and liquidity.
Future strategy and roadmap: Going forward, PEPE's key near-term milestone is the SEC's spot-ETF decision and continued multi-chain liquidity expansion; the project itself has no traditional product roadmap.
PEPE's team remains anonymous, with limited public info. Per on-chain sleuths and NotLarvaLabs founder Pauly's exposé, Zachary Testa (Twitter: @degenharambe) is identified as the founder. Born in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona, he graduated from Arizona State University in 2018 with a marketing degree and works as a landscape photographer. He reportedly bought an $865,000 purple Lamborghini from PEPE earnings, while giving zero proceeds to Matt Furie, the original Pepe the Frog creator. He also has a record of violating drone bans in wilderness and sacred indigenous areas. Other team members are known only by Telegram handles (e.g., @billyoptions, @zerozevia, @ekim222), with no verified real identities disclosed.
