About Monad
Monad is a high-performance, parallel-executing EVM-compatible Layer 1 for DeFi and infrastructure applications that want both throughput and a developer ecosystem. It solves the inability of the Ethereum Virtual Machine to support high concurrency under serial execution: Monad lifts throughput with a parallel virtual machine, an asynchronously executing consensus mechanism and a custom database pipeline, while keeping EVM bytecode compatibility so existing contracts deploy directly. Transaction execution uses optimistic parallelization with deterministic ordering, blocks propagate over a low-latency network, and stablecoins such as USDC and USDT0 serve as the on-chain settlement and liquidity base.
But deterministic execution and state-conflict handling under parallel EVM raise the bar for developer intuition and tooling, and the ecosystem is still in early accumulation. In early October 2026, Monad's high-performance EVM-compatible mainnet and the MON token officially launched.
In February 2023, Monad raised a $19M seed led by Dragonfly to build a high-performance parallel-EVM Layer 1.
On April 9, 2024, Monad Labs closed a $225M round led by Paradigm, the year's largest crypto raise.
On November 24, 2025, Monad's public mainnet launched with the MON token sale and airdrop, with a 100 billion initial supply.
In 2025, Monad pushed ecosystem incentives and developer programs, attracting DeFi and NFT deployments.
Mainnet launch: The high-performance, EVM-compatible Layer 1 mainnet and its MON token officially launched in early October 2026, after a testnet phase of about nine months that processed over 2 billion transactions at an average gas fee of about $0.006. Total supply is 100 billion MON, with 50.6% initially locked (26.9 billion team, 19.6 billion investors, 3.9 billion treasury) and 38.5 billion circulating at launch; 3.3% was airdropped to more than 225,000 verified users, the public-sale reference price was $0.025 USDC, and locked tokens unlock quarterly from H2 2026 through the end of 2029.
Market & ecosystem: MON listed on major venues including Coinbase, Upbit and Kraken, spiking to an all-time high near $0.048 in early October before retreating to around $0.023. MetaMask, Phantom, Curve, Uniswap and stablecoins such as USDC and USDT0 went live at launch; the project has raised over $225 million (Paradigm and others), Anchorage Digital is the preferred custodian, and a large November unlock has raised sell-pressure concerns.
In July 2026 the mainnet completed a hard fork that cut block times from 400 to 300 milliseconds and deterministic finality from 800 to 600 milliseconds (MIP-12); the same month Aave passed $250 million in deposits less than a month after launch, and Interactive Brokers enabled MON trading. On August 31, single-day DEX volume hit a record $362 million and monthly volume reached $3.64 billion, while perpetual futures volume topped $2.5 billion for the month.
As of September 30, Monad's DeFi TVL exceeded $1.01 billion ($1.91 billion including borrows), with 4.3 million mainnet wallets, 860 million cumulative transactions, more than 170 live apps and over $432 million in onchain RWA value; 1inch, o1, Ledger and Kraken staking, and SoFiUSD all integrated. An early investor liquidity program capped at $60 million closed in August, with nearly all eligible holders declining to participate.
Monad's differentiation is not throughput but its claim to be the neutral open chain: where Stripe's Tempo and Circle's Arc compete for payment settlement through corporate alliances, Monad breaks institutional needs into verifiable protocol pieces, namely post-quantum account authentication, BTX encrypted mempools, the Cadence multi-proposer consensus and the Private Settlement encrypted execution domains unveiled on October 6, offering privacy through the protocol rather than an operator. Commercial traction comes from RWAs and payments, with onchain RWA value in the top three chains, about $684 million in stablecoin supply, MON trading at Interactive Brokers and staking at Kraken, plus institutional and APAC hires from FalconX, Optimism and BVNK in February, showing the growth budget is aimed at institutions rather than retail incentives.
Monad is built by three co-founders: Keone Hon, James Hunsaker and Eunice Giarta. Hon is CEO; he studied computer science and mathematics at MIT, spent eight years at Jump Trading rising to team lead, began prototyping with Hunsaker in 2021, and left to start the company in 2022. Hunsaker is co-founder and CEO of Category Labs, was a senior engineer at Jump and earlier a vice president at Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan, and leads engineering hiring.
Giarta is COO, also an MIT graduate, with earlier stints trading at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and designing at Broadway Technology; she joined in 2022 and took over operations, recruiting and ecosystem funding. The three were colleagues at Jump, and early hires came through them from trading firms and infrastructure teams. Engineering splits into execution, consensus and developer relations, each lead reporting to Hunsaker, while operations report to Giarta.
Monad's recent team changes: In April 2026, Jarrod Watts joined as AI Engineering Lead; in May 2026, Andrea Canidio joined as Senior Researcher; in July 2026, Shreyas Hariharan departed, previously serving as Consumer Lead.
