About Hedera
Hedera is an enterprise-grade public chain using hashgraph asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance, serving institutions and developers needing high throughput and compliant properties. It addresses the slow finality and poor enterprise fit of traditional blockchains through a Gossip protocol and hashgraph consensus for high throughput and fast finality, governed by a council of up to 39 global companies. Its full EVM compatibility and RWA tokenization tooling let institutions deploy assets and payments within a governed framework.
Hedera does not burn network fees and has no buyback, while on-chain revenue remains limited, leaving a persistent gap between its market cap and network usage. As an enterprise chain, adoption is steady but hinges on the resource commitment of council members, and its fit is regulated asset tokenization, supply chain and payments needing enterprise-grade finality.
Hedera was founded in 2018 by Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon, using hashgraph consensus to deliver asynchronous Byzantine fault tolerance; its open mainnet launched in 2019 under a governing council of up to 39 global companies.
In April 2024 Archax tokenized a BlackRock money market fund on Hedera, giving the enterprise-focused chain its first large asset-management deployment.
In January 2026 the Canary HBAR ETF listed on Nasdaq as HBR with a 0.95% fee and about $59.8 million in assets by September; HBAR was also named a digital commodity in SEC and CFTC documents.
In March 2026 Lloyds Banking Group and Archax completed the first foreign exchange trade collateralized by tokenized RWAs on Hedera, moving tests into real interbank territory.
Accenture joined the governing council in April 2026 and FedEx at HederaCon in June; full EVM compatibility shipped on July 21, followed by v0.76.3 on August 30 with higher node message capacity.
HBAR traded near $0.08 in mid-2026 for a $3.5 billion market cap, about 86% below its $0.57 peak; enterprise adoption is advancing, but the token price has yet to reflect network usage.
Governance and ecosystem: Accenture joined the Hedera Council on April 30; Hitachi dropped off the council member list on October 8; WISeKey and SpaceDev joined the partner program on September 4; on September 24 Hedera donated its cross-ledger protocol CLPR to the Linux Foundation; Agent Accounts launched on October 8.
Capital flows: the Canary HBAR ETF in the US grew from about 473 million HBAR at end-2025 to about 806 million on October 9, 2026 (+70%), with continued net institutional inflows.
Revenue is questioned: daily on-chain revenue was only about $1,354 in late July (roughly $1.5 million annualized), network fees are not burned and there is no buyback; the 5-billion-HBAR treasury is nearly 95% distributed, and the market worries current revenue cannot support a market cap of about $4 billion plus staking and node rewards.
FedEx joined the Hedera Governing Council in February 2026, followed by Accenture and McLaren Racing in March, broadening the council across logistics, consulting and motorsport. That month a joint interpretive release from the SEC and CFTC classified HBAR as a digital commodity, removing securities enforcement uncertainty.
HederaCon Miami in May introduced the CLPR and HashSphere stack, and a June 11 integration with Archax let tokenised securities on the network pay USDC interest in near real time. The network handles more than 10 million transactions a day at a fixed $0.0001 per transaction, DeFi TVL has risen from about $60 million to roughly $208 million, Canary's HBR spot ETF holds about 704 million HBAR, and the Axelar integration connects more than 60 chains.
Future strategy and roadmap: The CLPR and HashSphere releases at May's HederaCon recast Hedera's expansion logic from one public chain into a network of networks: HashSphere is a permissioned private network that interoperates with the public mainnet and other chains, while CLPR replaces bridges with state proofs and threshold signatures. Both serve one business — wiring regulated institutions' private ledgers into a public settlement layer instead of forcing a choice between compliance and liquidity. A 31-seat council within a 39-seat cap, plus USD-denominated fixed fees, is what gets this onto bank procurement lists; but fees are paid to node operators and the treasury, so usage growth does not automatically bid for HBAR, whose demand leans more on the council's release schedule and on spot ETF holdings.
Leemon Baird is co-founder and chief scientist at Hashgraph, with a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University and a former professorship at the US Air Force Academy. He invented the hashgraph algorithm between 2012 and 2015.
Mance Harmon is co-founder and chairman of the Hedera Council. He holds a BS from Mississippi State University and an MS from the University of Massachusetts and was head of architecture at Ping Identity.
Eric Piscini is chief executive of Hashgraph, with master's degrees in computer science and economics. He was formerly Deloitte's global blockchain leader and chief strategy officer at IBM Watson Health, and joined in 2022.
Tom Sylvester is president of the Hedera Council, with a BA from Harvard University and a law degree from Yale Law School. He joined Hedera's legal team in 2018 and became council president in 2025.
