About BOB
BOB, short for Build on Bitcoin, is a hybrid Layer 2 that pairs Bitcoin's security with Ethereum's EVM execution. Assets move between Bitcoin and BOB through a BitVM-style bridge, the execution layer runs Solidity so Ethereum applications deploy unchanged, and users bring BTC into DeFi.
It targets the lack of programmability for bitcoin assets and the lack of native bitcoin collateral on Ethereum. The critical piece is the bridge: challenge mechanisms and staking constrain the custodian instead of relying on a single multisig, though the trust assumptions remain weaker than native Bitcoin. In 2026 it repositioned as a Bitcoin DeFi hub, folding lending, stablecoins and swaps into one entry point and interoperating with other Bitcoin L2s; ecosystem scale remains small next to Ethereum L2s, and the bridge is the main attack surface.
Key milestones with long-term significance:
- Released Hybrid L2 whitepaper, defining the hybrid architecture combining Bitcoin security with Ethereum composability.
- Completed $1.6M financing led by Ledger Ventures, securing early backing for development.
- Joined Optimism's Superchain ecosystem, receiving $870K funding, aligning with the broader rollup infrastructure.

Progress: BOB Gateway's per-transaction limit was raised to 2 BTC on April 15, the BitVM testnet bridge cut on-chain dispute costs by 87% to $10.91, with mainnet planned for 2026, and native Bitcoin vaults have been open-sourced.
Scale and risk: May TVL was about $212 million, with 561,000 users, more than 120 apps and $1.78 billion in cumulative volume. The top 10 holders control over 93% of supply and 100% of liquidity is unlocked, concentration risks flagged by third parties.
On March 12, 2026, BOB completed the Jovian hardfork (OP Stack Upgrade 17), boosting performance and Bitcoin interoperability; the same month's dev update merged 234 PRs across UI, Gateway and SDK, shipped a fixed-rate instant BTC-swap and quote-optimization prototype, and advanced limit orders, larger sizes and compliant privacy. Native BTC vaults and LSTs are live, with BitVM bridges nearing production.
Future strategy and roadmap: On future strategy, BOB is pursuing a 'Bank of Bitcoin' direction, planning merged mining for Bitcoin PoW security, BitVM-based trust-minimized BTC bridges in phase three, and 2026 rollouts of native BTC vaults, BTC-backed stablecoins and tokenized hashrate/mining markets.
