About Ledger

Ledger is a leading cryptocurrency hardware wallet company headquartered in Paris, France. Its core business consists of hardware signing devices (such as Nano X, Nano S Plus, Stax, and Flex) paired with the Ledger Wallet software application, enabling users to securely store private keys offline and sign transactions across multiple blockchain networks.

Ledger's core narrative has recently shifted from "hardware wallet" to "signing device," emphasizing that crypto assets exist on the blockchain, while the device securely holds the private keys that grant control. The company highlights its secure element (SE) chip and proprietary Ledger OS as key differentiators, along with Clear Signing technology that ensures users see exactly what they approve on a trusted screen.

The primary market pain point Ledger addresses is the vulnerability of self-custody — users risk losing funds to hacks, phishing, or accidental key exposure. Ledger solves this by isolating private keys offline, providing tamper-resistant hardware, and offering backup solutions such as recovery phrases and Ledger Recover.

In the past six months, Ledger patched a race condition vulnerability in its Ethereum app (fixed in version 1.22.2, released around August 12, 2026). The flaw, discovered internally by Ledger's Donjon security team using AI-assisted tools, could potentially allow a malicious app to replace a transaction during signing. Ledger's CTO Charles Guillemet publicly responded to related FUD, confirming the fix was deployed two weeks before external disclosure and urging users to update their device firmware and apps. No confirmed fund thefts have been reported in connection with this issue.

Ledger, founded in 2014, began with a €1.3M seed round led by XAnge Capital to develop Bitcoin security solutions. In 2016, the Nano S introduced a secure-element architecture, but a 2017-2018 supply-chain attack on the MCU exposed critical vulnerabilities, prompting firmware fixes and a shift toward transparent signing. The 2024 WazirX hack, where blind signing led to a $230M loss, highlighted the industry-wide risk, reinforcing Ledger's push for Clear Signing and its open-source Agent Stack for AI-wallet interactions. Ledger also discovered an Android vulnerability able to extract mnemonics in 45 seconds, underscoring ongoing security research. Financially, Ledger raised $50M in secondary equity in 2024, hired a former Circle executive as CFO, and postponed its US IPO, considering private financing instead. The 2025 resolution of co-founder David Balland's kidnapping and the US recovery of $600,000 from phishing scams marked legal milestones. Notably, Ledger has secured 20% of global crypto assets without a single hack, a testament to its evolving secure-element and transparent-signing model.

Over the past six months (2026-03-14 to 2026-09-14), Ledger has made major strategic moves.

First, it unveiled a 2026 AI Security Roadmap, delivering hardware-anchored identity (Agent Identity), programmable tooling (Skills & CLI), human-in-the-loop approval (Agent Intents), hardware-enforced spending/policy limits (Agent Policies), and Proof of Human attestation by Q4.

Second, Ledger rolled out its Device Management Kit (DMK) as the successor to LedgerJS, requiring all software wallets to migrate by mid-September 2026 to maintain signing compatibility.

Third, it open-sourced the Ledger Agent Stack, a four-part toolkit enabling agents to propose transactions while users retain final control on a Ledger signer.

Fourth, Ledger integrated post-quantum cryptography (ML-KEM and ML-DSA) into its SDK, preparing wallets for quantum-era threats.

Looking ahead, Ledger's roadmap focuses on AI-agent security primitives, DMK ecosystem standardization, and quantum-resistance hardening.
