About Neo
Neo (formerly Antshares), founded in 2014, is one of the earliest public blockchains. Its major milestones include: the 2017 rebranding to Neo and the first Giveback token redistribution; the 2021 launch of Neo N3, a full protocol upgrade introducing native oracles, NeoFS distributed storage, and a dual-token governance model with NEO/GAS; the June 2025 deployment of Neo-CLI v3.7.5; the October 31, 2025 shutdown of the Neo Legacy mainnet, requiring asset migration to N3; and the late 2025 governance crisis between co-founders Erik Zhang and Da Hongfei over financial transparency, culminating in a foundation restructuring proposal to transfer assets on-chain, implement staked voting with 180-day lockups, and establish an independent board—marking Neo's transition from founder-led to institution-driven governance.
Positive: Neo published its FY2025 financial report, disclosing $461M in total assets and a largely intact treasury. Da Hongfei proposed “Giveback II,” redistributing ~26M NEO and 40M GAS to holders, making NEO divisible, introducing 180-day unbonding staked voting, and shifting GAS rewards toward stakers. Plans include moving all assets to multisig custody and annual audits. Strategy pivots to stablecoins/cross-chain infrastructure and AI applications (Neo X, SpoonOS) to drive real demand.
Negative: The user base has shrunk significantly versus the 2017-2021 cycle, and Neo missed “DeFi Summer.” 85% of historical investments were severely impaired, including a Binance investment with no returns. 86% of assets remain in single-signature wallets, posing custody risk. Founder governance disagreements emerged (Erik Zhang’s counter-proposal). Large token redistribution may create sell pressure and exchange-support uncertainty.
