About Kaspa
Kaspa's development is anchored in consensus innovation. In 2013, Sompolinsky and Aviv Zohar proposed the GHOST protocol, later cited by the Ethereum whitepaper. In 2016, GHOSTDAG/PHANTOM took shape, laying the theoretical foundation for blockDAG.
On November 7, 2021, the Kaspa mainnet launched with a fair distribution—no pre-mine, no pre-sale, no team allocation. Every KAS traces back to the blank genesis block, a design that became the cornerstone of community trust.
In May 2025, the Crescendo upgrade rewrote the codebase from Go to Rust (rusty-kaspa), raising mainnet block speed from 1 to 10 BPS and achieving ~4,000 TPS, establishing the performance base for future scaling.
In 2026, the Toccata hard fork plans native L1 programmability, integrating KIP-17/20/16/21 for extended script opcodes, contract identifiers, and ZK verifier precompiles. The subsequent DAGKnight upgrade will make consensus parameters adaptive to network latency, replacing fixed assumptions.
These milestones trace Kaspa's path from theory to practice, from pure consensus to a programmable ecosystem.
Positive: The Toccata hard fork activated on June 30, 2026, introducing native covenants, ZK proof verification, and KRC-20 token support, enhancing programmability. Approximately 96% of supply is already circulating, with declining block emissions reducing sell pressure. KAS recently surged 20% on rising volume, with on-chain activity including covenant creation and Igra transactions.
Negative: Market response has been muted, with KAS still ~86% below its all-time high. KRC-20 assets are down 97-99% from peaks, L2 adoption remains low, and value capture is unproven. Miner revenue pressure persists, with hashrate down 80% from highs. Whale transfers to exchanges suggest short-term selling risk.
Yonatan Sompolinsky (Founder)
Yonatan Sompolinsky is the founder of Kaspa. He holds a PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University. He is the co-inventor of the GHOST protocol and the GHOSTDAG consensus mechanism underlying Kaspa. His research focuses on distributed systems, mechanism design, and cryptocurrency. He is active on Twitter as @hashdag.
