About Gitcoin

Gitcoin is a Web3 grant platform that funds open-source software and public goods. Its core business runs onchain grant rounds, where community members make small donations and a matching pool amplifies them using Quadratic Funding (QF) — a formula that weights the number of unique contributors more heavily than the total amount. Since 2019, it has distributed over $60 million to 3,700+ projects. The platform also provides infrastructure: Allo Protocol is an open-source smart-contract framework for creating grant programs, while Gitcoin Passport (now Human Passport) aggregates identity credentials to resist Sybil attacks.

Gitcoin's core narrative is solving the 'public goods funding gap' — open-source maintainers historically earn little despite massive usage. QF lets the crowd decide what matters, creating a more democratic alternative to foundations or corporate sponsors. The pain point it addresses is the coordination failure in financing non-rivalrous, non-excludable goods.

In the past six months (2026-03 to 2026-09), Gitcoin announced a strategic shift: moving focus from general public-goods funding toward Ethereum infrastructure donations, and establishing Gitcoin Labs to strengthen technical decision-making. This responds to the DAO's execution weaknesses — governance voting was too slow for software development. The organization now operates two units: one coordinating product work, another (subDAO) handling community governance. Recent rounds like Gitcoin Grants 24 allocated ~$1.8 million using multiple mechanisms. Notable challenges remain: Sybil attacks and collusion persist despite countermeasures, and QF's fundamental vulnerabilities are unresolved. The Protocol Guild, a related initiative, has raised over $100 million for ~190 Ethereum core contributors, but core developers still earn 50-60% below market rates.

Gitcoin Grants launched in 2019 as a landmark on-chain quadratic funding experiment. The 2023 Beta Round marked the shift to a decentralized protocol with Grants Stack built on Allo Protocol. GG21 in 2024 became the first fully community-led round, validating external operators despite a sharp drop in OSS funding, prompting GG22 to restore OSS as the primary track. GG24 in 2025 debuted Gitcoin 3.0 with the Domain Allocator model, combining QF, MACI, retroactive funding, and hypercerts. Meanwhile, a phishing attack via GitHub notifications highlighted infrastructure security risks.
