About vana
Vana is an open protocol for user-owned data, designed to give individuals control over how their personal data is collected, stored, and accessed by AI applications. Its core business is a decentralized data infrastructure: a user's data stays on their own device (via a Personal Server), is encrypted before syncing to cloud storage, and can only be decrypted when the user grants an on-chain permission. Developers build apps that request access to this data, pay protocol fees, and use it to train models or personalize services.
The main pain point Vana addresses is the current internet model where platforms lock up user data and AI companies scrape it without consent. Vana shifts this by making data portable and permissioned: every access is recorded on-chain, and users can review an access log. The protocol also supports pooled confidential compute (DataDAOs) as an optional application layer, allowing privacy-preserving collaborative data use.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), Vana has focused on rolling out scope-native permissions and per-grant fee escrow, which are live on the Moksha testnet and moving toward mainnet. Protocol-Governed Encryption (PGE) is also being deployed to enable threshold key release, so no single party can decrypt user data. The core onchain primitives (identity, permissions, fees, schemas, files) and the DP RPC are already live.
One notable limitation: once data is returned to a builder, that copy is outside the user's control — the protocol governs whether a read happens and leaves a record, but not what a builder does with data it already received. Additionally, the current convenience infrastructure (RPC gateway, Context Gateway) is operated by ODL, though the protocol is designed to work without it.
Vana released token economics with a 120 million total supply and 44% allocated to the community. The testnet airdrop was completed, followed by the launch of native token VANA. The mainnet went live on December 16. Binance supported the network upgrade and hard fork. YZi Labs invested, with Zhao Changpeng joining as advisor and participating in a Space on AI and data ownership.
Anna Kazlauskas: Co-founder and CEO. With a background in CS and Economics from MIT, she conducted research at CSAIL, the Federal Reserve, the ECB, and the World Bank. An early Ethereum miner, she later founded YC-backed ML company Iambiq and was an early core engineer at Celo. She founded Vana in 2021 and also serves as co-founder and CEO of Open Data Labs.
Art: Managing Director. He holds an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School, with legal training from MIT Sloan and the University of Queensland. He previously worked as a lawyer at DLA Piper, senior legal/operations adviser to the Timor-Leste government, impact sourcing manager at Appen, and consultant at The Cadmus Group. He has been Managing Director at Vana since 2024, and is an advisor and former COO of Open Data Labs.
Recent team change at Vana: Victoria Van Gogh, who joined in 2024 as Head of APAC, departed in April 2026. No new hires were reported during this period.
