About Terra Classic
Terra Classic, initially launched as the Terra blockchain in 2019, was designed as a decentralized financial infrastructure focused on algorithmically stabilized stablecoins (UST) and a payment ecosystem.
Key milestones with long-term significance:
2019: Mainnet launch, introducing a dual-token model (LUNA and UST) and the concept of algorithmic stablecoins, which laid the foundation for its later DeFi ecosystem.
May 2022: The UST de-pegging event triggered a catastrophic collapse of the Terra ecosystem, leading to a hard fork. The original chain was renamed Terra Classic (LUNC), while a new chain (Terra 2.0) was created. This event became a landmark case study in crypto risk management and algorithmic stablecoin design.
Post-collapse community governance: The Terra Classic community took over control, implementing a token burn mechanism (LUNC burn tax) and voting on proposals to reduce supply and restore value. This marked a shift from a centralized team-driven model to a community-driven one.
2023: The L1 Joint Task Force (L1JTF) upgraded the network to version 2.0.0, based on Cosmos SDK v0.45, enhancing technical stability. In December 2025, Binance announced support for Terra Classic network upgrades, signaling continued exchange-level recognition and infrastructure support.
These events highlight Terra Classic's evolution from an ambitious DeFi experiment to a community-resilient chain, offering lasting lessons on decentralization, governance, and risk.
