About Rhea Finance
Rhea Finance is a decentralized lending and trading protocol built on NEAR, formed from the merger of Ref Finance and Burrow Finance. It offers cross-chain DEX, lending, leveraged trading, and yield farming through a chain-abstraction layer powered by NEAR Intents and Chain Signatures.
Its core value proposition is intent-based cross-chain interoperability: users express financial goals (e.g., borrow USDT or swap TRX) without manually bridging assets or managing multiple wallets. The protocol aggregates liquidity across chains, with features like LP token collateralization, up to 3x leverage, and automated routing for optimal execution.
Key pain points addressed include liquidity fragmentation, complex bridging processes, and multi-wallet friction. By abstracting chain complexity, Rhea enables users to interact with DeFi across ecosystems using a single wallet and unified interface.
In the past six months (March–September 2026), Rhea integrated with the TRON network in March, extending its cross-chain liquidity to TRON users. However, in April 2026, the protocol suffered a major security breach: an attacker exploited a slippage protection flaw in multi-step swap routing, draining approximately $18.4 million. The attacker manipulated fake token pools on Ref Finance to trigger mass liquidations. About $11.2 million was recovered or frozen, including returned USDC/NEAR and USDT frozen with Tether's assistance. The protocol contracts were paused, and the team continues investigating with exchanges and law enforcement.
Rhea Finance emerged from the merger of Ref Finance and Burrow Finance on February 27, 2025, creating a unified cross-chain lending and DEX platform. Its token RHEA was later listed on Binance Alpha, with an airdrop campaign for Alpha point holders, marking a significant distribution event. However, on April 16, 2026, the protocol suffered a major hack, with initial losses of $7.6 million later revised to $18.4 million. The attacker manipulated oracles and fake token pools, triggering liquidations and draining reserve funds. Partial recovery was achieved, but the incident highlighted critical security vulnerabilities in DeFi composability. These milestones—the merger, exchange listing, and exploit—define Rhea's trajectory, underscoring both its ambitious integration and the inherent risks of decentralized finance.
On Apr 16, 2026, Rhea Finance suffered an oracle manipulation attack, with actual losses of ~$18.4M—one of NEAR's largest DeFi security incidents. RHEA token fell over 8%, a major negative. The protocol permanently halted margin trading.
Subsequently, ~$11.2M was recovered or frozen, RHEA promised full compensation for the remaining ~$400K shortfall, the DEX reopened, and lending was planned to restart in May—partial positives.
Rhea Finance's core team includes Illia Polosukhin as an advisor. He is the co-founder of NEAR Protocol and NEAR.AI, focused on open, user-owned AI and scalable blockchain ecosystems. Previously, he was an Engineering Manager at Google Research, co-authored the seminal paper 'Attention Is All You Need' (introducing the Transformer architecture), and worked on TensorFlow. He holds a Master's in Applied Math and Computer Science from National Technical University 'Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute'. Other team members (CEO Zero, CTO Marco, COO Aescobar, advisor Bowen) lack reliable public bios.
