About Litecoin
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer digital currency designed for online payments, launched in 2011 as a faster and cheaper alternative to Bitcoin. Its core business is enabling low-cost, quick transactions for everyday purchases, supported by broad merchant acceptance and wallet compatibility.
The market pain point it addresses is the high fees and slow confirmation times of traditional payment systems and legacy blockchains. Litecoin solves this with transaction fees typically under $0.01 and block confirmations every 2.5 minutes, making it practical for small-value transfers.
Its competitive edge lies in its long operating history, strong brand recognition in the crypto payment space, and the MimbleWimble Extension Blocks (MWEB) privacy feature, which offers optional confidential transactions while keeping the base layer transparent.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), Litecoin experienced both challenges and progress. In March, a critical validation flaw in MWEB was discovered, allowing an attacker to create inflated withdrawals. This led to a 13-block reorg in April, briefly reversing about three hours of transaction history. The network recovered through miner coordination, and most funds were returned. The Litecoin Core 0.21.5.5 update fully patched the vulnerability, with no confirmed user fund losses.
Meanwhile, network activity showed resilience. Daily active addresses rose from about 237,000 in February to roughly 255,000, and daily transactions stayed between 180,000 and 200,000. The Canary Litecoin ETF (LTCC) began trading on Nasdaq in late October 2025, and by March 2026, the SEC and CFTC jointly classified LTC as a digital commodity. However, the ETF held only about $5.3 million in net assets after eight months, indicating modest institutional demand. The Litecoin Foundation also held its first summit outside the US in Amsterdam in June. The LitVM zero-knowledge layer-2 testnet launched in April and processed over 75 million transactions, signaling ongoing development beyond payments.
Litecoin (LTC) launched in October 2011 as a Bitcoin fork by Charlie Lee, targeting faster payments with 2.5-minute blocks, Scrypt mining, and an 84 million supply cap. Key milestones include: 2017 activation of SegWit (first major coin to do so), enabling Lightning Network compatibility; 2019 second halving (block reward to 12.5 LTC); August 2023 third halving (to 6.25 LTC).
A defining long-term event occurred in 2022 with the activation of MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Block), an optional privacy and scalability layer. However, in April 2026, a zero-day vulnerability in MWEB triggered a DoS attack and abnormal transactions. A block at height 3,073,882 minted 85,034 LTC out of thin air; funds were returned after contact, with an 850 LTC bounty. A second exploit in April 2026 caused a 13-block reorg (heights 3,095,931-3,095,943), costing a third party 11,000 LTC. Fixes shipped in Litecoin Core v0.21.5.4 (April 2026), v0.21.5.5 (May), and v0.21.5.6 (August 2026, with a soft fork at height 3,154,440). As of mid-2026, under 30% of reachable nodes ran the latest software.
On the ETF front, Litecoin spot ETFs saw modest inflows in 2026 (e.g., $2.03M and $2.11M single-day inflows), but also a 7-day streak of zero net inflows with a 10% price drop, reflecting mixed market sentiment.
Positive: In September 2026, Grayscale filed an amended S-3 to convert LTCN into an NYSE Arca-listed ETF with continuous creation/redemption, potentially narrowing discounts and attracting institutional capital. LitVM smart-contract development advanced with a $1M strategic investment. LTC remained the third-most-used payment asset on CoinGate.
Negative: In March 2026, an MWEB vulnerability was exploited to illegally peg out ~85k LTC; a second attack in April caused a 13-block invalid chain affecting some services. Although fixed, confidence was shaken. On-chain data showed large-holder addresses fell to 2022 lows, ETF demand stayed modest, and LTC remained ~90% below its all-time high.
Litecoin has no co-founders; only founder Charlie Lee.
Charlie Lee: American computer scientist, BS/MS in CS from MIT. Former Google software engineer (worked on Chrome OS, YouTube Mobile), later Director of Engineering at Coinbase. Released Litecoin in 2011; sold all LTC in 2017 to avoid conflict of interest. Currently Director at Litecoin Foundation.
Active core executives: Alan Austin (President/Managing Director); Xinxi Wang (Director); David Schwartz (Director of Strategic Partnerships); Keith Yong (Operations Director); Jay M (Marketing Director); Robbie Coleman (Creative Director); David Burkett (Litecoin & MWEB Developer).
