About Bancor
Bancor launched in 2017 as the first automated market maker (AMM) on Ethereum, introducing the concept of smart tokens and on-chain liquidity pools. In 2020, Bancor v2.1 pioneered single-sided liquidity provision and impermanent loss protection, a landmark innovation that reshaped DeFi liquidity incentives. In 2022, Bancor v3 introduced instant IL protection and a unified BNT pool, but extreme market conditions forced the protocol to pause IL protection, revealing systemic risks. In 2023, Bancor launched Carbon, a decentralized protocol for automated trading strategies with asymmetric liquidity and adjustable bonding curves, alongside Arb Fast Lane, an arbitrage infrastructure that expanded to multiple chains including Linea. Bancor also pursued legal action against Uniswap for patent infringement, though the case was dismissed, and later won a jurisdictional ruling in Texas, affirming its decentralized nature. Centralized Liquidity 2.0 was released to enhance capital efficiency. These milestones define Bancor's long-term impact: pioneering AMM design, addressing LP pain points, and advancing on-chain automation.
Bearish: In August 2026, Bancor suspended Impermanent Loss Protection, citing market volatility and BNT liquidation by two large centralized entities, undermining its core selling point; BNT fell over 60% in a month.
Bullish: In May 2026, Bancor DAO passed a proposal to cut Carbon's stablecoin pair fee to 0.001% to attract liquidity, aiming to revive the ecosystem, though short-term impact was limited.
Co-founders: Galia Benartzi (Business Development; ex-Venture Partner at Founders Fund, co-founded Particle Code), Guy Benartzi (Galia's twin brother; serial entrepreneur; Mytopia acquired by 888), Eyal Hertzog (Product Architect; community-currency pioneer), Yudi Levi (CTO; led original smart contract development).
Current core executives: Yudi Levi (CTO/Chief Architect), Asaf Shachaf (Head of Product), Jennifer Albert (Director of Communications & Head of Brand and Marketing).
