About World
World is a global identity and financial network. Its core product is World ID, a digital passport that uses iris scanning (via the Orb device) to verify a person is a unique human, not an AI bot or deepfake. World App is a self-custodial wallet that supports payments, transfers, and the WLD token. World Chain is an Ethereum Layer 2 network designed for human-verified activity.
The main narrative is "proof of human" — providing a reliable way to distinguish real people from AI in an era of deepfakes and bots. The pain point it addresses is the growing difficulty in trusting online interactions, from social media to airdrops and voting, where bots and fake accounts dominate. World aims to make online spaces human-first and inclusive.
In the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), World entered its "Phase 3," shifting from token incentives to selling verification services. This includes extending proof-of-human to AI agents via AgentKit, allowing AI agents to prove they act on behalf of verified humans. Partnerships with Okta, Shopify, Coinbase, and Zoom were announced. However, World faced legal trouble: São Paulo state sued World and AWS for allegedly exploiting economically vulnerable people with biometric data collection, seeking $47 million in damages. The lawsuit claims World continued crypto rewards after Brazil's data protection authority ordered a halt in 2025.
World (formerly Worldcoin), co-founded by Sam Altman, launched in 2023 with the goal of building a global identity and financial network centered on proof-of-personhood. Its mainnet World Chain went live in October 2024, an Ethereum L2 designed to prioritize verified humans over bots. In 2025, World ID v4 introduced account abstraction and multi-key support, enhancing wallet flexibility and privacy. The project has faced significant regulatory and ethical scrutiny: Thai regulators ordered the deletion of over 1.2 million iris scans, and investigator ZachXBT questioned the ethics of collecting biometric data from low-income users via token incentives. Financially, World raised $67 million in early-stage funding, later executed a $52.5 million strategic WLD sale to institutional investors, and US-listed Eightco completed a $270 million private placement for its Worldcoin vault strategy. In July 2025, Grayscale filed with the SEC to launch a WLD ETF, signaling growing institutional interest. The network now claims over 390 million users globally, with plans to release a new World ID app version. These milestones—from technical upgrades to regulatory battles and institutional adoption—define World's trajectory as a controversial yet pioneering force in digital identity.
