About Radicle

Radicle is a peer-to-peer code collaboration network built on Git, eliminating the need for centralized platforms like GitHub. Developers host repositories on their own nodes, synchronize data via a gossip protocol, and use cryptographic key pairs as identities. Core features include issues, patches (pull requests), and code review, all managed without a central server.

Its core value lies in censorship resistance and user sovereignty. Unlike GitHub, Radicle has no single point of failure, cannot be shut down or have accounts banned, and ensures data integrity through signed references (sigrefs). It also supports offline operation via local Git repositories.

In the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), Radicle 1.7 and 1.8 were released, focusing on security and performance. Key updates included: sigrefs to prevent replay attacks, connection-level node blocking (not just data-level), arbitrary Git object references (except temporary branches), and SQLite I/O optimization (synchronous=NORMAL). A security advisory in March 2026 disclosed a vulnerability in signed references, which was patched. However, the ecosystem remains small, with limited third-party integrations and a steep learning curve compared to GitHub.

Radicle, a peer-to-peer code collaboration network, launched its public beta in late 2020 with the open-source desktop client Radicle Upstream. In February 2021, it completed a third funding round backed by Aave, The Graph, and Polkadot founders, and sold 3.75 million RAD governance tokens via a Balancer liquidity bootstrapping pool. The RAD token (total supply 100 million, 50% allocated to community treasury) enables decentralized governance through RadicleDAO, with voting and proposals. By early 2021, the network hosted over 1,300 projects, growing ~10% weekly, including participants from Aave, Synthetix, Uniswap, and Gitcoin. A significant milestone was the introduction of signed references feature levels (none, root, parent) in version 1.8.0, enhancing security against downgrade attacks and enabling automatic migration. The project also launched the Seeder program to foster community health and long-term sustainability, moving toward full decentralization.
