About Portal
Portal to Bitcoin is a non-custodial interoperability protocol designed to let Bitcoin interact with other blockchains without bridges or wrapped tokens. Its core business is enabling direct, peer-to-peer atomic swaps between BTC and assets on networks like Ethereum or Solana, powered by its BitScaler technology and a validator network. Users retain full control of their funds throughout transactions, which addresses a major pain point: Bitcoin's isolation from DeFi. Traditional cross-chain methods rely on custodial bridges or wrapped assets, introducing security risks and trust assumptions. Portal eliminates these by using hash-time-locked contracts (HTLCs) and a verification network, making cross-chain trading more secure and trust-minimized. The PTB token serves as the network's utility currency, used for transaction fees, governance, and staking, with a deflationary mechanism that burns a portion of swap fees.
Over the past six months (February to August 2026), Portal has focused on expanding its ecosystem. It announced a partnership with Rooch Network to integrate native BTC swaps into Rooch's infrastructure, enhancing Bitcoin DeFi accessibility. The testnet reportedly surpassed one million wallet downloads, and the protocol claims collaborations with over 80% of Bitcoin Layer-2 projects. However, challenges remain: the token's market value has been volatile, and liquidity depth is still limited compared to established DeFi platforms. The long-term viability depends on whether the bridge-less model can attract sustained liquidity and user adoption beyond the testnet phase.
