About Ontology
Ontology is a public chain launched in 2017 that uses VBFT consensus, combining a verifiable random function with BFT voting and proof-of-stake to produce blocks, and supports both Wasm and EVM runtimes for contracts. Identity is a protocol-level component: ONT ID is a W3C-compatible DID whose credentials can be selectively disclosed for on-chain identity and compliance use, and the dual-token design has ONT carry staking and governance while ONG pays gas, dampening fee volatility for applications.
It leans toward enterprise identity and consortium use, unlike a general-purpose contract platform such as Ethereum, because DIDs and credentials are built in rather than deployed as separate protocols. Mainnet v3.0.0 arrived in December 2025 with ONG released at one token per second, 80% of it to ONT stakers; in January 2026 governance cut on-chain gas fees by 80% and lowered the minimum staking threshold from 500 ONT to 1 ONT.
Burn and governance: Community governance cut on-chain gas fees by 80% in January. Earlier, 200M ONG was burned, ONG supply was permanently capped at 800M and a liquidity-lock programme continues.
Staking: Mainnet v3.0.0 went live in December 2025, paying 1 ONG per second with 80% to ONT stakers and 20% to the ecosystem fund. The minimum stake fell from 500 ONT to 1 ONT for users and from 100,000 to 10,000 ONT for candidate nodes, with KYC dropped. The 2026 roadmap followed on 11 March.
On July 2, 2026, Ontology unveiled a new strategy at its eighth anniversary, turning ONTO Wallet into an identity and verified-human-data platform with a four-part Ontology EVM upgrade (integrating Shanghai and Cancun opcodes). On January 22, 2026, community governance cut mainnet gas fees by 80%; the ONG tokenomics reform burned 200 million ONG and permanently capped supply at 800 million. Ontology serves RWA and AI data needs with its ONT ID decentralized identity and verifiable credentials.
Future strategy and roadmap: Ontology will keep upgrading its DID and verifiable-credential infrastructure, evolve ONTO Wallet into a user-owned data-monetization engine for the AI economy, and advance EVM performance and validator decentralization.
