About Astar
Astar Network, originally launched as Plasm in 2019, rebranded to Astar in 2021 and became the first parachain to secure a slot on Polkadot's first auction. Its mainnet went live in August 2021, establishing a multi-chain smart contract hub supporting both EVM and Wasm. In March 2024, Astar zkEVM, built with Polygon's zk-rollup technology, went live, but was announced to cease operations on April 1, 2025, with users advised to withdraw assets. A significant token burn of 350 million ASTR was proposed and executed, reducing supply. The partnership with Binance introduced a staking mechanism, enhancing ASTR's utility. These milestones mark Astar's evolution from a scaling solution to a broader Web3 platform, though its zkEVM shutdown reflects strategic pivots in a competitive landscape.
Sota Watanabe is the founder of Astar Network. He previously worked at Chronicled in San Francisco and was a blockchain researcher at the University of Tokyo. He is also a task force member on the Japanese government's Trusted Web Promotion Council. No other co-founders or current core executives with reliable information were found.
