According to Cryptobriefing, UFC superstar Conor McGregor publicly criticized his rival Khabib Nurmagomedov after the retired champion launched a series of NFTs inspired by the traditional Dagestani hat "papakha," which became famous due to his performances in the UFC. Social media reports indicate that the NFT series generated approximately $4.4 million after its release, and Nurmagomedov deleted his promotional tweets immediately after the sales were completed. McGregor quickly accused Nurmagomedov of running a "scam," claiming he was exploiting the name of his late father and Dagestani culture to profit from fans, only to erase all traces of promotion afterward. He bluntly stated that this was a "shame and stain" on Nurmagomedov's father's legacy.
Nurmagomedov retaliated by calling McGregor a "fraud," insisting that the NFTs were legitimate "digital gifts" aimed at promoting tradition. He stated that McGregor was still trying to humiliate him years after losing their 2018 bout. Additionally, McGregor had ventured into the cryptocurrency space, collaborating with Real World Gaming DAO to launch the "REAL" meme coin, but the presale did not meet its target, and the team ultimately refunded the bidders.
