About Steem
Steem launched in March 2016 as the first social blockchain to implement a "write-to-earn" model. It uses DPoS consensus, produces blocks every 3 seconds, charges no transaction fees, and distributes newly minted tokens to content creators and curators through a rewards pool. Its flagship app, Steemit, quickly attracted over a million users, and on-chain transaction volume once exceeded that of Bitcoin and Ethereum combined.
In December 2019, Tron founder Justin Sun acquired Steemit, but the community opposed his governance control. In March 2020, some community members initiated a hard fork to create the Hive blockchain, freezing tokens controlled by Sun and splitting the ecosystem. This event highlighted centralization risks in DPoS governance and pushed decentralized social networks to emphasize governance transparency.
Since then, Steem has continued operating with its original chain and community. As of 2026, Steem hosts over 320 apps and processes more than 1.1 million transactions daily, maintaining a presence through multiple market fluctuations. However, its influence has been partly diverted by Hive and newer SocialFi protocols. Its history provides a typical case for Web3 social in token distribution, governance conflicts, and community splits.
Positive: The redesigned Steemit Wallet passed security audit and is expected to launch within two weeks; the Condenser frontend rebuild is progressing toward a Q3-end release; the core protocol roadmap includes AI-assisted code review, public testnet, removal of unactivated SMT code, post-quantum signature migration, per-active-key transfer limits, RocksDB tuning, AMM introduction, and ARM64 support.
Negative: On May 20, the 0.23 hardfork confiscated about $5 million in STEEM tokens targeting Hive supporters, sparking governance controversy with Vitalik and others criticizing centralization risks; in September, STEEM plunged 23% in six hours after a 49% weekly surge, then a 30% rally was rejected at 0.078 and fell back to 0.060, with heavy volume signaling selling pressure.
