About NEBRA

NEBRA is an Ethereum-based proof aggregation service. Its core product, UPA (Universal Proof Aggregation), combines multiple zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) into a single aggregated proof for on-chain verification. This directly tackles the high gas costs of verifying ZKPs on Ethereum—for instance, a single STARK proof can cost over a million gas. By aggregating, NEBRA reduces verification costs by roughly 5 to 10 times, making ZK applications more economically viable.

Its key strengths are universality and trustlessness. UPA supports various proof systems (e.g., Groth16, STARK) without requiring application-specific changes. The aggregator is permissioned but cryptographically constrained—it cannot include invalid proofs, so users need not trust the operator. This "centralized but untrusted" design balances efficiency with security.

In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-31), NEBRA has focused on ecosystem integration. It announced collaborations with Brevis (a ZK coprocessor) and AltLayer (a rollup framework), enabling their users to leverage UPA for cheaper proof verification. The team also open-sourced a prover tool that replicates the aggregator's core functionality, enhancing transparency. No major security incidents or disputes were reported during this period.

The key milestones and long-term significance of NEBRA are as follows:

In March 2024, NEBRA Labs was officially established as a research and development organization focused on zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) aggregation technology. Its core product, Universal Proof Aggregation (UPA), aims to address the high cost of on-chain ZK proof verification on Ethereum.

In April 2024, UPA completed its first partner integration and released technical documentation detailing how its aggregation scheme merges multiple ZK proofs into one, significantly reducing on-chain verification overhead.

In May 2024, NEBRA published the UPA Gas Costs analysis report, quantifying the gas optimization achieved through aggregation, providing data support for subsequent large-scale adoption.

In July 2024, NEBRA hosted Proof Day in Brussels, focusing on real-world ZKP use cases and fostering ecosystem development.

In August 2024, UPA went live on the Ethereum mainnet, marking the transition of the aggregation service from testing to production and becoming a significant milestone in ZKP infrastructure.

In October 2024, UPA announced support for RISC Zero and Succinct SP1 proof systems, further expanding its cross-proof-system compatibility and providing a unified aggregation entry point for various ZK applications.

These milestones collectively outline NEBRA's trajectory from research to deployment and from a single proof system to multi-system compatibility. Their long-term significance lies in lowering the barrier to ZK application adoption and driving the scalable adoption of the Ethereum ecosystem.
