About Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the first decentralized digital currency, proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto in a 2008 whitepaper and launched in 2009. It uses blockchain and proof-of-work consensus to let network nodes jointly verify transactions, enabling peer-to-peer electronic cash without banks or other intermediaries. Its core narrative is 'digital scarcity': a fixed supply of 21 million coins, immutability, and censorship resistance.

It addresses market pain points such as reliance on financial intermediaries, slow and costly cross-border transfers, fiat currency devaluation due to over-issuance, and the double-spending problem in electronic payments. Bitcoin allows anyone to custody and transfer assets autonomously at any time, with all transactions publicly verifiable.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Bitcoin's price stabilized around $64,000 in June after an earlier correction, with a market cap of about $1.33 trillion. The network experienced its first 'hashrate bear market': from May 28, hashrate dropped from 1,030 EH/s to 885 EH/s, miner revenue per PH/s fell 26.96% in 30 days to $28.26, and difficulty was expected to decrease 10.76% on June 13. Transaction fees accounted for less than 1% of miner rewards, a long-term structural concern. Still, Bitcoin's security is considered robust because the cost of a 51% attack remains prohibitively high.

Bitcoin, the first decentralized digital currency, was proposed by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto in a whitepaper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" on October 31, 2008. The genesis block was mined on January 3, 2009, embedding a headline about bank bailouts, marking the network's official launch.

Key long-term milestones include: the first real-world transaction in May 2010 when 10,000 BTC bought two pizzas; the emergence of exchanges like Mt.Gox in 2010, which later suffered a massive hack in 2014, highlighting security challenges; the 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 halvings that systematically reduced block rewards, reinforcing its deflationary supply schedule capped at 21 million coins.

In 2017, Bitcoin Cash forked over block size debates, demonstrating governance tensions. El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, a historic first for national adoption. The approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs by the U.S. SEC in January 2024 opened institutional investment channels, and Bitcoin's price surpassed $100,000 in December 2024, reflecting growing mainstream acceptance.

Recent developments with lasting significance include Bitcoin Core v32's feature freeze, tripling block validation speed, and early breakthroughs in quantum resistance, such as StarkWare's first quantum-resistant transaction, which address future security concerns. These nodes collectively illustrate Bitcoin's evolution from a cypherpunk experiment to a globally recognized asset class.

Bitcoin has no official co-founders or executive officers; it is governed by user consensus and bitcoin.org is an independent open-source project. The pseudonymous creator is Satoshi Nakamoto, who originally co-registered bitcoin.org with Martti Malmi. The closest current "core leadership" is the Bitcoin Core maintainer group: Ava Chow, Hennadii Stepanov, Michael Ford, Ryan Ofsky and Ruben Somsen. Stepanov (@x.com/hhebasto) is a Brink-funded, Ukraine-based core and GUI maintainer, known for the CMake build migration and 1,800+ commits. Portland (@x.com/PortlandHODL), listed as a Bitcoin project contributor from Marathon Digital, lacks a full public bio. No maintainer can force protocol changes.
