About Aurora

Aurora is an EVM-compatible blockchain built on the NEAR protocol, designed to let Ethereum developers deploy their existing smart contracts and dApps with lower transaction costs and faster finality. Its core business is providing a developer platform that supports the Ethereum tooling ecosystem, along with features like Virtual Chains for customizable app-specific networks and the Rainbow Bridge for asset transfers between Ethereum and NEAR.

The main market pain point Aurora addresses is Ethereum's high gas fees and network congestion, which limit dApp usability and scalability. By leveraging NEAR's underlying architecture, Aurora offers a cheaper and more efficient alternative while maintaining full EVM compatibility, meaning developers don't need to rewrite their code.

In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), Aurora experienced a significant network outage on July 20, 2026, when block production halted for approximately two hours before recovering. This incident raised concerns about operational transparency, as the team did not immediately publish an explanation. Additionally, the network's total value locked (TVL) has declined dramatically from its 2022 peak of around $1.36 billion to roughly $4.65 million, reflecting reduced activity and attention. Despite these challenges, Aurora continues to maintain its core infrastructure and developer tools, though its market presence has notably diminished compared to earlier years.

Aurora, an EVM built on NEAR Protocol, launched its mainnet in May 2021, introducing a scalable and low-cost Ethereum-compatible environment. The Rainbow Bridge, deployed shortly after, enabled trustless asset transfers between Ethereum and NEAR, marking a foundational step for cross-chain interoperability. In 2024, Aurora Cloud was released, allowing developers to deploy custom virtual chains as smart contracts on NEAR, significantly reducing infrastructure costs and complexity. This shift toward app-chain solutions represents a long-term strategic evolution. Additionally, Aurora's adoption of the Cancun EVM upgrade in 2024 demonstrated its commitment to staying aligned with Ethereum's roadmap while leveraging NEAR's sharded architecture for enhanced performance. These milestones reflect Aurora's trajectory from a simple EVM compatibility layer to a comprehensive platform for scalable, customizable blockchain solutions.

Negative factors: On July 20, 2026, the Aurora EVM mainnet suffered a complete outage after block production halted, disrupting all transactions and smart contracts. TVL collapsed by over 99% from its 2022 peak of ~$2.5B to just ~$4.65M. No official explanation or recovery timeline was provided, further eroding confidence. The network's diminished significance limited broader market impact but underscored ongoing decline.

Aurora's co-founders and core executives:

Arto Bendiken (Co-founder & CTO, @bendiken): A cypherpunk and autodidact with 25+ years in programming. He led the EVM team at NEAR, then spun off to build Aurora's EVM from scratch, ensuring 100% Ethereum compatibility.

Alex Shevchenko (Co-founder, @alexauroradev): PhD in Applied Physics and Mathematics. Formerly at Bitfury, where he led the Exonum blockchain project. He joined NEAR's product team and later co-founded Aurora, focusing on scalability and developer access.

Matt Henderson (Chief Strategy Officer, @dafacto): Previously Head of Product at Aurora, driving products like Rainbow Bridge and Aurora Cloud. With a background in product design and strategy, he now oversees strategic initiatives to make Web3 accessible.
