About XMTP
XMTP (Extensible Message Transport Protocol) is an open, decentralized messaging protocol designed for Web3. Unlike traditional messaging apps, it does not rely on a central server. Users can send end-to-end encrypted messages using their wallet address or decentralized identity (DID). The protocol is built on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) standard, providing forward secrecy and post-compromise security, with additional quantum-resistant encryption. Messages are stored on a distributed network of nodes, ensuring no single point of failure or censorship.
Its core value proposition is interoperability and user sovereignty. Since XMTP is a protocol rather than a platform, any application can integrate it, and users can access their conversations from any compatible client without being locked into a single app. This addresses the market pain points of data silos, privacy leaks, and platform lock-in common in centralized messaging. For developers, it removes the need to build and maintain their own messaging infrastructure, allowing them to focus on user-facing features.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), XMTP has focused on expanding its ecosystem and enhancing network decentralization. A notable development is the strategic partnership with Mask Network to integrate XMTP into Lens Protocol, Orb, and Firefly applications, enabling seamless cross-platform communication within the decentralized social ecosystem. Additionally, the network has been migrating toward a more distributed node architecture, with a testnet already live and mainnet deployment underway. These efforts aim to strengthen the protocol's resilience and broaden its adoption across Web3 social and messaging applications.
XMTP's key milestones include the February 2025 launch of its decentralized testnet, marking the shift from centralized infrastructure to a community-run network. In July 2025, XMTP integrated live messaging into the Base app, combining AI, finance, and secure group chats, demonstrating practical use cases for agent-to-agent communication. The roadmap targets mainnet completion by March 2026, introducing phased decentralization with fee-based economics, staking, and eventual permissionless participation. These steps establish XMTP as a foundational layer for secure, interoperable messaging in the Web3 ecosystem.
XMTP (Extensible Message Transport Protocol) is a decentralized messaging protocol. Its co-founders are Matt Galligan and Shane Mac.
