Union

Union is a Layer 1 blockchain built on the Cosmos SDK, designed specifically for cross-chain interoperability. Its core business is providing ultra-fast cross-chain message passing and asset transfers, with a focus on expanding Bitcoin DeFi (BTCfi) use cases. The protocol uses zero-knowledge proofs and BLS signatures to verify the consensus states of connected chains, enabling it to extend IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) functionality to networks that don't natively support it, such as Ethereum and Bitcoin ecosystems.

Union's key differentiator is its consensus-based security model. Unlike traditional bridges that rely on multi-signature schemes, oracles, or trusted intermediaries, Union directly verifies the consensus of connected blockchains. This means cross-chain communication achieves the same security level as the underlying chains themselves. The protocol claims to be the first sub-second messaging protocol, enabling near-real-time state transfers and application-specific intents. Its long-term vision includes a "proof singularity" (unified ZK proof system), "infinite connections" for interoperability, and "real-time" communication.

The market pain point Union addresses is the security vulnerability of conventional bridges, which often become targets for hacks due to their reliance on trusted parties. By eliminating these intermediaries, Union aims to provide a trust-minimized alternative. Products include auBTC (a native cross-chain yield-generating Bitcoin asset) and a privacy transfer solution announced in November 2025.

In the past six months (February to August 2026), Union has been focusing on ecosystem expansion. The mainnet launched in a limited capacity in April 2025, initially targeting Bitcoin DeFi interoperability. By August 2025, the ninth and final testnet phase concluded, processing over 300 million transactions. The protocol has established partnerships with projects including Babylon, BOB, Corn, Lombard, Bedrock, and Solv. It has also launched developer fellowship, incubation, and grant programs to support ecosystem growth.

However, there are concerns. The U token has a relatively small market cap (around $7.89 million as of November 2025) and ranks low on tracking sites. The project has not yet demonstrated sustained user adoption beyond testnet activity, and the transition from testnet hype to real-world usage remains an open question. Additionally, the ZK-based approach, while technically sound, faces competition from other interoperability solutions in a crowded market.
